Persona 5: The Animation is an anime television series produced by CloverWorks based on the Persona 5 video game by Atlus. The anime series is directed by Masashi Ishihama and written by Shinichi Inotsume, with Tomomi Ishikawa adapting Shigenori Soejima's original character designs for the animation. Atlus employee Kazuma Kaneko created the original demon designs, while music composer Shoji Meguro reprised his role from the game.
The 26-episode series aired in Japan between April and September 2018, followed by four special episodes; one aired in December 2018, a second in March 2019, and two more releases bundled with the Blu-Ray releases in May and June 2019. Additionally, an animated television special by A-1 Pictures, The Day Breakers, aired prior to the game's Japanese release in September 2016. The series is licensed in North America by Aniplex of America.

The anime television special The Day Breakers was announced in September 2015 during Atlus' stage event at the Tokyo Game Show.[5] In July 2016, the title of the special was revealed as Persona 5: The Animation – The Day Breakers with Takaharu Ozaki as the director, Shinichi Inotsume as writer, Toshiyuki Yahagi and Keita Matsumoto as the character designers and A-1 Pictures as the studio. It premiered on September 3, 2016[6] with a runtime of 24 minutes on Tokyo MX, later airing on GTV, GYT and BS11.[7][8] Aniplex of America licensed the special in North America in October 2016.[9]
The 26-episode anime television series adaptation was announced in July 2017 for a 2018 premiere, with CloverWorks animating the series.[3] The anime series is directed by Masashi Ishihama and written by Inotsume, and features adapted character and demon designs from the game by Tomomi Ishikawa and Kazuma Kaneko, respectively.[10] The soundtrack was written by the game's original lead composer Shoji Meguro, who wrote both new material and arranged music from the game. Lyn performs the series' opening and ending themes; the opening themes are "Break In to Break Out" (episode 1–13) and "Dark Sun" (episode 14–26), while the ending themes are "Infinity" (episodes 2–16), "Found a Light" (episode 8), and "Autonomy" (episode 17–26).[11][12] The series aired on Tokyo MX and other networks from April 7 to September 30, 2018.[13] The first half of the epilogue to the series, titled Dark Sun..., aired on December 30, 2018.[14] A second TV special, titled Stars and Ours and listed as the second half of the epilogue, was aired on March 23, 2019.[15][16] Two final special episodes were announced to be included as extras with the 11th and 12th Blu-Ray/DVD volumes of the series.[17]
Aniplex of America has also licensed the series in North America with Crunchyroll simulcasting it.[18] Aniplex of America released the complete series on Blu-ray on September 29, 2020, including an English dub with the cast from the game reprising their roles.[4] Despite the release of Blu-ray, the English dub was available early on August 18 as digital release exclusively on Funimation, which all 26 episodes including 2 special episodes available on that date. Anime Limited acquired the home video and digital rights to the series for the United Kingdom.[19] Channel 4 will stream the English Dub on their All 4 on-demand platform for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.[20]
Madman Entertainment will release the series in Australia and New Zealand.[21]

Managing to expose Tsukasa's lies to Eiko, the Phantoms defeat his Shadow in the Metaverse, while Makoto aspires to become a police officer like her father. | ||||

When asked to meet in person, Alibaba suddenly calls off the request and asks the Phantoms not to look into Futaba any further. Learning that Futaba is a relative of Sojiro, who is under pressure from Sae concerning his parental authority of her, the gang, receiving a threat from Medjed that they will attack Japan if their identities are not revealed by 31st July, go to Sojiro's house and come face to face with Futaba. | ||||

| After Sojiro catches the group sneaking into his home, he explains how Futuba's current situation as a shut-in stems from witnessing her mother Wakaba seemingly commit suicide, and how a few months prior started imagining hallucinations. Although he pleads with them not to involve themselves into Futaba further, the gang decide to help and change her heart after discovering she has a Palace. Visiting Futaba as the school holidays commence, they learn that she sees her home as a tomb and that she will die. The group infiltrates Futaba's Palace and become aware of her deteriorating mental state. After finding their way blocked by the same door to Futaba's room, the group return to reality and convince her to invite them inside. After some more persuasion, Futaba opens up and directly asks the gang to change her heart. | ||||

Gaining the Persona Necronomicon as a result, Futaba uses its supportive abilities to help the Phantoms defeat the monster. Meanwhile, Shujin High School's principal, Kobayakawa, is killed after suffering a mental shutdown and walking in front of traffic. Sae's investigation data leads the gang towards Kunikazu Okumura, whose company allegedly stood to profit from those who died from mental shutdowns. Despite Kunikazu having a Palace, the group becomes split over whether they should rush into pursuing him. Deciding to infiltrate the Palace on his own only to run into trouble, Morgana is saved by a certain girl. | ||||

As Morgana remains defiant about rejoining the others, he gets injured while trying to protect Haru from her abusive fiancée, Sugimura, prompting the others to come to their aid. As Morgana becoming honest about his feelings of wanting to stay with everyone, Haru learns that Kunikazu has decided to speed up her engagement to Sugimura. | ||||

After the Phantoms are forced to leave the Palace before it collapses, a mysterious figure kills Kunikazu's Shadow. Unaware of this, the gang become shocked when Kunikazu suddenly dies of a mental shutdown during a press conference. | ||||

| As public opinion of the Phantoms plummet following Kunikazu's death, Haru learns of a fake calling card placed in Kobayakawa's office, leading the gang to realise that someone set them up. As Sae is put in charge of investigating the Phantoms, Futaba deduces that someone had imitated Medjed and hacked the Phansite to make the Phantom Thieves more popular on purpose. Later, Ann calls Ren to meet up with her and Shiho, who thanks them for saving her life and reminds them of why they became Phantom Thieves in the first place. Afterwards, the gang, upon discovering Mishima has become too obsessed with the fame he received from the Phansite, find his Shadow in Mementos, choosing not to destroy him but instead urge him to think things through for himself, helping the real Mishima find the right path as a result. | ||||

Despite the clear danger to this, Makoto follows through with it to gain more information. | As the gang try to figure out a way to reach the top floor of Sae's casino Palace, Sojiro, who discovers a calling card in Futaba's room, is under pressure from Futaba's uncle, who is demanding that he pay him money or else give up custody of her. Ren gets Akechi's help to dig up dirt on the uncle, only for him to accuse Ren of pushing him. When government officials come to question Sojiro, Ren and Futaba manage to assure them that Sojiro is a good guardian, after which they come clean to Sojiro about being Phantom Thieves. | ||||

| Needing an excessive amount of coins in order to access a bridge to the Treasure, Ren wins the money in a coliseum battle. Sae raises the bridge's fee, but Akechi manages to make use of a loop hole in the casino's charge card system to obtain the full amount and access the bridge. After the gang manage, to defeat Sae's Shadow, enemies surround the Palace, prompting the gang to split up and find their way out. | ||||

| Following a reunion with Arsene, who urges him to remember everything, Ren is captured by the police, leading to his present day interrogation by Sae. As the interrogation draws close to an end, Ren, recalling an important discussion with Morgana and Futaba, asks Sae to show his phone to Akechi as he makes his way towards the interrogation room. After running into Sae and being shown the phone, Akechi reveals his true intentions and shoots Ren, making it look like a suicide. | ||||

| As news spreads of Ren's alleged suicide, Sae brings a very much still alive Ren back to the LeBlanc to hide. Upon reuniting with Ren, the gang explain that they took advantage of Sae's cognitive world, which had an interrogation room identical to the one in reality. In addition to faking Ren's death, the Phantoms confirmed their previous suspicions of Akechi's treachery prior to their battle with Sae's Shadow and is the culprit behind the mental shutdown. The mastermind however is the rising politician and prime ministerial candidate Masayoshi Shido, an outspoken critic of the current Japanese government and the Phantom Thieves. Upon seeing his face, Ren finally identifies Shido as the man who is responsible for his criminal record. The group infiltrates Shido's Palace as the election campaign is underway, but also confronts and battles Akechi. Akechi sacrifices himself to save the Phantoms from his own cognitive version, while the group finally confronts Shido's Shadow. The ensuing battle sees Ren victorious against Shido's Shadow and force Shido to have a change of heart. Despite the group's success, Shido's supporters plan to move Shido's policies forward to turn public opinion against the Phantom Thieves. | ||||

With belief and faith in the Phantom Thieves waning, the group decides to pull one final job: infiltrating and stealing the treasure inside Mementos, the collective cognition of mankind and "Everyone's palace". Succeeding will mean a change of heart for the public as a whole but the end of the Metaverse and the Phantom Thieves as a group. Mementos's treasure, the Holy Grail, however, is sentient and seeks to subjugate mankind and control their cognition. The Grail merges the Metaverse with reality and manipulates mankind's cognition to erase the members of the Phantom Thieves from existence. Ren, however, awakens in the Velvet Room. After fusing Caroline and Justine back into their original form, Lavenza, "Igor" reveals himself to actually be the Holy Grail in disguise and leaves to conquer reality while the real Igor is freed from his imprisonment. Ren then frees the Phantom Thieves from their cells, where they have re-manifested, and the group vows to save the world by defeating the Holy Grail, who reveals itself to be Yaldabaoth, a god representing humanity's sloth. The group defeats Yaldabaoth as humanity's faith and cognition of the Phantom Thieves recovers. With the Metaverse destroyed and the hearts of public changed, Shido's support falters and he does not become prime minister. To secure Shido's conviction and protect the live of his comrades, however, Ren agrees to surrender himself to police, admit to being the leader of the Phantom Thieves, and agree to testify against Shido, which results in his arrest and incarceration in a juvenile detention center. Months later, Ren is released and the group takes a trip together to take Ren back to his hometown. | ||||

| Ren finds that Akechi has written "proof of justice" in the crossword puzzle book and investigates their hangout spots, the billiards room and Jazz Jin, for clues on what it means, while reminiscing about the times Akechi confided in him. He later discovers "proof of justice" is the name of a popular toy gun, realizing that it represented Akechi's desire to be a hero. After returning home, Ren reevaluates what his proof of justice is. The next morning, the news reveals that Shido has been hospitalized for an emergency, causing Ren to investigate with his friends in alarm. | ||||

In the final scenario, all of the girls beat him up the day after he spends the evening with Ryuji, under the impression he is cheating on them. The post-credits scene features an additional scenario where Ren attends an opera concert with Sae. | ||||
Reception[]
The anime received mixed reception. Joe Ballard from CBR praised the anime for the portrayal of the characters that stays true to the original game. However, he criticized the pacing as it doesn't allow the time for those character developments to truly affect the audience. He also criticized how most of the female characters are subjected to excess fan service moments. He finds the shots from purposely sexualized camera angles are unnecessary and demeaning, stating that "it feels like a slap in the face to their personal struggles, especially considering one of the palace storylines revolves around physical and sexual abuse and the resulting mental health struggles."[24] Megan Gudman from the same site praised the anime for bringing back Lyn and Shoji Meguro's music and the expand of Ren and Akechi's relationship, but criticized the dull animation and its poor handling of the Confidant characters.[25] USGamer criticized Joker's relatively silent personality in the anime adaptation, negatively comparing him to the more talkative Yu Narukami in Persona 4: The Animation.[26]
