When Lord Rama was on his way back to Ayodhya from Lanka after defeating Ravanasura (ravana samharam), he and his troops reached Bradhana puri at sunset; named Proddu in Telugu, the local language.

Lord Rama convinced sitha to stay the night at the river bank of Penna in Bradhana puri.

In Afternoon Rama wanted to pray Lord Shiva and wanted a Shivalingam so he asked hanuman to bring kasi Shivalingam so that he can pray to lord. When it was late for hanuman to bring the Shivalingam and lord Rama made a sand Shivalingam and did pooja. Hanuman said to take my Shiva lingam but Rama said it was late to bring kasi Shivalingam. So this Shivalingam is still there in Proddatur in a town called Rameswaram "Rama" means Rama and "Eshwaram" means Shiva.
