Rangabali(Red Sand) is an Upazila of Patuakhali District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh.[1] It is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the south, and Char Fasson Upazila to the east; and by the Kalapara Upazila and Rabnabad Channel to the west, and Chalitabunia river, Agunmukha river and Char Biswas to the north.[2]
History[]
The sandy char was formed many centuries ago and the sand is said to have been a red-orange colour. In the local dialect, the word ranga describes this colour and bali refers to sand. So the island was named as Rangabali, or red sand. In 1784, there was a large influx of Rohingya refugees escaping from persecution by King Bodawpaya in the Third Burmese Empire. On 7 June 2011, Rangabali became an upazila after being partitioned from the Galachipa Upazila.[2]
