Raoul Petretta (born 24 March 1997) is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Basel in the Swiss Super League. Born in Germany, he has represented Italy at youth level.

Club career[]

Born in Rheinfelden, Germany, Petretta started his youth football with Basel in 2005. He played in their U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams and in July 2015 he moved to their U-21 team. He played 24 games, scoring one goal, in his first season and played 14 games during the first half of the next season, before he signed a three and a half year professional contract on 16 February 2017 and joined their first team.[1]

He played his debut in their first team on 2 April 2017 in St. Jakob-Park during the 4–0 home win against Lugano. Under trainer Urs Fischer Petretta played 5 League games and won the Swiss Super League championship at the end of the 2016–17 Super League season. For the club this was the eighth title in a row and their 20th championship title in total.[2] They also won the Swiss Cup for the twelfth time, which meant they had won the double for the sixth time in the club's history.[3]

Under trainer Marcel Koller Basel won the Swiss Cup in the 2018–19 season. In the first round Basel beat FC Montlingen 3–0, in the second round Echallens Région 7–2 and in the round of 16 Winterthur 1–0. In the quarter finals Sion were defeated 4–2 after extra time and in the semi finals Zürich were defeated 3–1. All these games were played away from home. The final was held on the 19 May 2019 in the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf Bern against Thun. Striker Albian Ajeti scored the first goal, Fabian Frei the second for Basel, then Dejan Sorgić netted a goal for Thun, but the end result was 2–1 for Basel.[4] Petretta played in three cup games.

Petretta was born in Rheinfelden, Germany, from parents from Volturara Irpina, Avellino, Italy.

On 25 May 2018, he made his debut with the Italy U21 team in a friendly match lost 3–2 against Portugal.
