Route 2020 is a branch metro line on the Red Line[2] of the Dubai Metro network in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It links Jabal Ali metro station with Expo 2020.[3] As of May 2021, only the section from Jabal Ali to Al Furjan is in operation.

After the Opening of Expo 2020 and Dubai Investments Parks, Route 2020 has become a part of Red Line and Branch Line is Created from Jabal Ali to UAE Exchange

Overview[]

An extension of the Red Line to the Expo 2020 site was announced in December 2015 and originally due to be completed mid-2019. The extension project, named "Route 2020"[4] creates a branch of the line from Nakheel Harbour & Tower to the Expo 2020 site, near Al Maktoum International Airport. The 15 km extension passes through Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investment Park, Al Furjan, and Jumeirah Golf Estates, comprising seven new stations, five elevated and two underground.[5] As a result of increasing popularity of the metro, the new stations feature platforms wider than those found in existing stations, to cope with greater ridership.[citation needed]

The track layout east of Jabal Ali station was modified to create a new "Route 2020" branch to Expo 2020 and two additional platforms to the southeast which are used to serve the new route.[citation needed] The extension was partially opened on 1 January 2021, with trains running a shuttle service between Jabal Ali and Al Furjan.[6] The line was extended to Expo 2020 on 1 June 2021. The route is expected to have 275,000 users each day by 2030.[7]

The branch line is 15 km in length, with 11.8 km are above ground and 3.2 km below ground.[8][3] Of the seven stations, five are elevated and two are underground.[5] Eventually it is planned to extend the line beyond Expo 2020 to Al Maktoum International Airport, south of the Expo site.[9]

The travel time between Rashidiya metro station at the northern terminus of the Red Line and the Expo 2020 station is reported to be 1 hour 14 minutes with a service frequency of 2 minutes and 38 seconds during peak times (24 trains per hour in each direction), and a capacity of 16,000 passengers per hour in each direction.[1]

History[]

Construction of the Route 2020 metro line was started in 2016 by the ExpoLink Consortium, comprising Alstom, Acciona, and Gülermak.[8] The line was formally inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's Ruler and UAE Prime Minister, on 8 July 2020.[10]

As part of the Expo 2020 development in Dubai, an extension of the Red Line has been constructed between Jabal Ali and the Expo 2020 site, known as 'Route 2020'. The extension was partially opened on 1 January 2021, between Jabal Ali and Al Furjan.[5] Two further stations, Dubai Investment Park and Expo 2020, were opened on 1 June 2021.[11]
