Scottish Women's Football League Second Division Cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scottish Women's Football League Second Division Cup was a cup competition in Scottish women's football, only open to teams in the four groups of the Scottish Women's Football League Second Division (Central, East, North and West). The Second Division was the lowest division in the women's football league system in Scotland. The tournament consisted of six rounds, including the final.

Background[]

Second Division clubs previously played in Scottish Women's Football League First Division Cup, when it was called the Scottish Women's Football League Cup. This was a competition open to all teams in the First and Second Divisions, i.e below the Scottish Women's Premier League (similar to the men's Scottish Challenge Cup).

However, in 2012, the SWF decided to launch separate cup competitions for First and Second Division teams.[1] From 2009, women's football in Scotland adopted a summer season from March to November, and so each edition of the cup was played within a single calendar year.[2]

A reorganisation of the leagues in 2019 introduced a new Championship division (and cup) along similar lines to the SWFL First Division, with teams below forming a standalone 'Recreational' setup continuing the SWFL name and a format of regional groups.[3][4] The First Division Cup again became the SWFL League Cup, but with no second tier below the new SWFL groups, the Second Division Cup was discontinued.

Format[]

All matches were played over only one leg. With between 40 and 50 teams entering, only some teams took part in the first round. The winners meet the remainder in the second round, a standard last-32 knockout.[5]
