South Morang railway station is located on the Mernda line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of South Morang, and it opened on 22 April 2012.[2]
History[]
Stopping Place No. 39[3] was the original South Morang station. It was a single platform that was located on McDonalds Road,[4] on the Whittlesea line. Operated by DERMs, the Victorian Railways closed the line north of Lalor station on 29 November 1959,[2] after the electrification of the line from Reservoir to Lalor. Epping station was re-opened on 29 November 1964, with the electrification of that section of the line,[2] and the remaining section of track from Epping to Whittlesea dismantled, with the former right-of-way remaining intact. All that remained of the original station was the platform mound.
Following the election of the Bracks State Government in October 1999, a promise was made to restore the rail service to South Morang by 2003. In 2004, it was decided a bus would be delivered instead, and in May 2006, the original promise of rail was delayed until 2021. As a result of continued community pressure by the South Morang Rail Alliance, an alliance of all the community groups in the area, then Premier John Brumby announced in 2008 that construction of the extension would be brought forward to 2010. The station was opened to the public on 22 April 2012.[2]
The Epping line was extended to the border of South Morang and Mill Park, about two kilometres short of the original station site. As part of the extension project, five kilometres of track was duplicated between Keon Park and Epping stations, a second platform built at Thomastown, while a grade separation project resulted in a new station at Epping.[5] Provision was made to allow the line to be extended northwards to Mernda. An extension to Mernda opened on 26 August 2018.[6][7]
