The Southern Regional Assembly was established on 1 January 2015.^[1] This followed an amendment to the Local Government Act 1991, replacing 8 Regional Authorities with 3 Regional Assemblies.

It has 33 members: 27 appointed by their constituent local authorities, and 6 as Committee of the Regions representatives.^[2]

The Southern Region (coded IE05) is a NUTS Level II statistical region of Ireland.^[3]^[4] It contains three strategic planning areas, each of which is a NUTS Level III statistical region.

Mid-West	IE051	The councils of the counties of Clare and Tipperary and the city and county of Limerick.
South-East	IE052	The councils of the counties of Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford and the city and county of Waterford.
South-West	IE053	The councils of the counties of Cork and Kerry and the city of Cork.
