The Tanti (anglicised as Tanti, Tanty, Tantee) is a surname of Hindu community in India.[1] The greatest concentration is believed to be in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West bengal, Assam as well as Odisha.[2] They are slightly less concentrated than some groups because their designation started with their occupation rather than a particular group.

Origin[]

The word tanti is derived from the Hindi word tant, which means a loom. They were traditionally weavers, and are one of the many communities found in South Asia, traditionally associated with this craft. The community is foud in Ranchi and other part in Jharkhand.[1][3]

In Bihar the community titled as Tanti was actually Pan/swasi by caste and pan/swasi caste is located at 18 serial number in Bihar list of SC/ST caste since 1956 by the approval of president of India. Now the serial number of pan/swasi in this list is at 20. The people belongs to pan/swasi community is schedule caste as per government of India. Hence, in Bihar there is not any existence of tanti by caste since 1 July 2015 . Tanti is only title of Pan/swasi community in Bihar.[4][citation needed]
