Ted Failon at DJ Chacha sa Radyo5 (formerly known as Tambalan and Failon Ngayon) is a Philippine morning infotainment radio program hosted by Ted Failon and Czarina Balba-Guevara a.k.a. DJ Chacha that airs on weekdays from 6:00 am to 10:00 am (PHT). It started broadcast on Radyo5 92.3 News FM (simulcast on Radyo5 stations in the Philippines except DXFM) since October 5, 2020.[2]

The program is simulcast on TV5 from 6:00 am to 7:30am (until February 19, 2021; resumed on October 4) and on One PH from 6:00 to 10:00 am, except during severe weather coverage when all three outlets carry the show in its entirety, Allied Broadcasting Center-owned 104.7 Ka-Boses Radio Tacloban and 99.9 Ka-Boses Radio Ormoc City, both located in Failon's home province of Leyte also airs the program through a syndication agreement since October 19, 2020.

It was first broadcast on DZMM with Failon as host, and co-hosted by Korina Sanchez as Tambalang Failon at Sanchez from 1996-2001 and 2004-2009; and Pinky Webb as Tambalang Failon at Webb from 2009-11. After Webb left the program on August 5, 2011,[3] it assumed the title of the namesake weekly current affairs program broadcast on ABS-CBN a month later.

Prior to May 5, 2020, the program was broadcast from 8:00am to 10:00am (PST) nationwide on ABS-CBN's Radyo Patrol AM radio network from the studio of DZMM and simulcast on TeleRadyo. It would continue as a cable-exclusive program until Failon's departure on August 31. On September 11, 2020, TV5 Network announced that Ted Failon, DJ Chacha, and the then-untitled show would move to its radio station Radyo5 92.3 News FM.

A distinct feature of Ted Failon at DJ Chacha and its lineal predecessors is Failon's usage of music and sound effects while anchoring the program, but added entertainment segments catering to celebrity interviews, comedy, love advice, free money contests, and music requests under the current format, mirroring the practice of South Korean morning infotainment shows.

History[]

Background[]

Failon was hired in March 1990 as an evening desk editor for ABS-CBN News prior to becoming the inaugural anchor of Gising Pilipinas months later with a weekday airtime of 2:00 to 4:00 am. By 1992, he was moved to hosting the radio station's public service program Aksyon Ngayon where he was first paired with Gel Santos-Relos and eventually Korina Sanchez, the progenitor of Tambalan - widely reckoned by Philippine media historians and listeners as the current program's lineal predecessor.

Tambalang Failon at Sanchez (1996–2001; 2004–2009)[]

Tambalang Failon at Sanchez debuted at the 8:00-10:00 a.m timeslot in 1996 shortly after the departure of Mel Tiangco and Jay Sonza. The program was initially broadcast as a general commentary format before both hosts incorporated vignette characters discussing the topics at hand, aside from Failon's use of various sound effects - a tactic that he utilized, originating from his prior career as an FM disk jockey.

Tambalang Failon at Sanchez first ended its run in March 2001 when Failon ran and later won the Congressional seat for the 1st legislative district of Leyte in the May elections. The show resumed broadcast in late 2004 at the 8:00 am slot until 2007 when the morning edition of Dos por Dos expanded to an hour, bumping the program to an 8:30 am slot and reducing its time to 90 minutes. In April 2007, the show began simulcasting on DZMM TeleRadyo.

The show's second run ended in 2009 when Sanchez went on leave to support the Vice-Presidential campaign of spouse Mar Roxas. Pinky Webb was later named as Failon's partner, renaming the show to Tambalang Failon at Webb.

Tambalang Failon at Webb (2009–2011)[]

The new reformat took place in October 2009, with minimal changes. However it only lasted until August 2011 when Webb decided to concentrate on TV duties coinciding with her being named as TV Patrol Weekend anchor.

Failon Ngayon (2011–2020)[]

In line of changes to its namesake public-affairs television program, the longtime Tambalan series was renamed as Failon Ngayon sa DZMM in September 2011, with Ted Failon anchoring the show alone while carrying over the use of sound effects and concentrating on long-form interviews and field reports as a supplement to the TV show. It also returned to a two-hour runtime, beginning at 8:00 am.

By 2012, the program added segment anchor Joey Rebaté for occasional man on the street interviews and later had an added duty distributing ABS-CBN TV Plus digital set-top boxes to lucky listeners upon the service's launch in 2015.

In 2013, the program added DJ Chacha (Czarina Balba-Guevara) of MOR 101.9 as segment anchor for show business and listeners feedback. Initially starting off as a once-a-week duty, positive reviews led to her role continuously expanded. By 2014, her segment already ran thrice a week at 9:00 am; she permanently became co-anchor to Failon in 2016.

Failon Ngayon had its last broadcast on DZMM 630 AM on May 5, 2020 - hours before the NTC handed the cease and desist order in the afternoon that ordered shutting off all ABS-CBN's terrestrial broadcast assets due to expiration of the network's legislative franchise to operate. It resumed broadcast on May 8 through cable on the provisionally rebranded TeleRadyo, and renamed as Failon Ngayon sa TeleRadyo.

However, on August 30, 2020, ABS-CBN released the statement announcing Failon's departure from the network as a result of retrenchments stemming from the July 10 House committee vote denying the company a legislative broadcast franchise. The program made its final broadcast on August 31 featuring a retrospective of his career. Failon later made his final appearance on TV Patrol via Zoom.[4] Balba-Guevara also announced her departure from the network on the same day, having ended duties three days prior as MOR 101.9 disc jockey as the personnel of the station were also retrenched.

The vacated timeslot was taken over by effective September 1, initially hosted by one of Failon's relief anchors Ricky Rosales and Kori Quintos.

Ted Failon at DJ Chacha (2020–present)[]

On September 2, media reports surfaced that Failon, Balba-Guevara and his program staff are to transfer to Radyo5 92.3 News FM, a news and public affairs FM radio station owned by TV5 Network's affiliate, Nation Broadcasting Corporation for his own radio program on the station, it was later made official on September 11.

Contrary to first reports of the premiere date being set on September 21, 2020, it was pushed back to October 5.[5][6][7] Preliminary information from network-level arrangements further disclosed that the program would double its airtime to four hours, with the first half allotted for news and the remaining half will be modeled after Failon's original commentary style while he was with DZMM.

Further details from the network-level arrangements were made official on the program's virtual media conference held on October 1, 2020, including the first disclosure of giving away cash prizes to lucky listeners and interviews with newsmakers. Balba-Guevarra stated that the program would be the "2.0" of their previous show.[8]

Ted Failon at DJ Chacha premiered on October 5, 2020 at 6:00 am, replacing Orly Mercado and Cheryl Cosim's Early All Ready and prompting Boljak! hosted by attorneys Bruce Rivera and Jess Falcis to move to an evening timeslot as lead-out programming after Radyo5's simulcast of Frontline Pilipinas until its final broadcast on New Year's Eve.

The program was simulcast from 6:00 am to 7:30 a.m. on TV5 and initially ran 6:00 - 9:00 am on One PH, rendering it as TV5's first morning show since Aksyon sa Umaga, which ended in 2017.[9] It also added segments catering to celebrity interviews (Good Morning Lodi), comedy (Make Us Laugh), love advice (Dear Ted and Cha, discontinued after November 12, 2020), live phone-in musical requests (Music By Request) and free phone-in money contests (Hula-Hits) - mirroring the format of South Korean morning drive-time infotainment shows such as Jang Sung-kyu's Good Morning FM of MBC FM4U, Kim Young-chul's Power FM of SBS Power FM and Kim Tae-hoon's Freeway of KBS Happy FM, making it the pioneer Philippine radio (and television) program to adopt the practice. During severe weather coverage, the show would break format and simulcast proceedings in its entirety on all platforms, such happened during the station's November 12, 2020 coverage of Typhoon Vamco, locally known as Typhoon Ulysses.

On October 19, 2020, the program began to be broadcast in Failon's home province of Leyte through a syndication agreement with Allied Broadcasting Center-owned 104.7 Ka-Boses Radio Tacloban and 99.9 Ka-Boses Radio Ormoc City; the move was formally acknowledged by the hosts on its October 23 broadcast.

Further changes on the program began on January 4, 2021, when it added motivational speaker and wealth and life coach Chinkee Tan for his own segment Chink Time: Learn and Earn. On January 11, the cable and satellite simulcast on One PH permanently expanded to include the entire 4-hour airtime of the program partly due to insistent viewer request and entry of the station's new management from Cignal and PhilStar. Prior to the expansion, the 9:00 am hour of the radio show was pre-empted by Mag-Badyet Tayo!, hosted by Tan and Christine Bersola-Babao except on select days when Tan was unavailable. The program itself moved to the 10:00 am slot on the same day.

The March 11, 2021 episode acknowledged the simulcast of inactive yet still NBC-owned DXTY 101.1 News FM Zamboanga.[10]

The TV5 simulcast of Ted Failon at DJ Chacha sa Radyo5 ended on February 19, 2021 to give way to an expanded TV5 Kids programming block and the launch of Frontline sa Umaga on May 10, 2021. It resumed airing on October 4, along with former One PH show Mag-Badyet Tayo, with an shortened airtime of 30 minutes; as Frontline sa Umaga moved to the timeslot of now-defunct Idol in Action.

Since May 20, the Think About It segment was expanded to digital streaming service Spotify.[11][12][13] It marks Failon's expansion to digital platform.

Radyo5 Network News[]

Similar to the former practice of Noli de Castro's Kabayan fusing with the half-hour Radyo Patrol Balita Alas-Siyete (later TeleBalita and currently TeleRadyo Balita), where Failon formerly served as co-anchor, at 7:00 am, Ted Failon and DJ Chacha combines with Radyo5 Network News at the said timeslot, also running for a half an hour. After experimenting 45 minutes slot, since October 4, 2021, the news segment is running for half an hour again at 7.30 am, giving way to news and talk on TV5 simulcast which is aired an hour earlier.

  • Hula-Hits - a phone-in segment where listeners try to guess the first (or second) song leading-off the broadcast at 6:00 a.m. The lucky caller wins PHP2,000 if guessed correctly. The rules were revised in April where contestants would now try to guess the titles of all songs played on the broadcast.

  • Music By-Request - phone-in segment where listeners request a song to be played immediately by the hosts.
