Theodore Roosevelt High School, usually referred to simply as Roosevelt High School or TRHS, is a public secondary school located on the west side of Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of five secondary schools in the Des Moines Independent Community School District, and was named after the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt.

History[]

The construction of the building in which TRHS is housed was initiated in 1922 by Proudfoot, Bird, and Rawson and opened in 1924 with 1,282 students. The final cost to build was $1,331,600. The building's design has won many awards and is considered one of 50 most significant buildings in Iowa by PBS. The building is on both the State and National Register of Historic Places.

Curriculum[]

Roosevelt High School

Students must be enrolled in physical education at least one semester each year and complete CPR certification. They are also required to take core academic courses in order to graduate and receive a diploma. These include Social Studies, English, Mathematics, Science, and Art.

Visual and Performing Arts[]

Roosevelt offers a range of visual and performing arts programming, including 2D & 3D design, painting and drawing, band, orchestra, theater, choir, and AP music theory.[8] Students in the music program participate in statewide events under the Iowa High School Music Association, which includes the Iowa All-State Festival, Solo & Ensemble Contest, and Large Group Festival. Students who participate in theater classes and the extracurricular Thespians Club are eligible to participate in District, State, and All-State contest, under the Iowa High School Speech Association. Musicals are adjudicated by the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, a division of the Jimmy Awards.

Roosevelt competes as a school in the Iowa High School Athletic Association 4A school. The Roughriders are members of the Central Iowa Metro League, and participate in the following sports:[9]

      • 0 state championships, last state tournament appearance was 2019, which resulted in a first round exit to Dowling Catholic.
      • On November 22, 2020, Head Coach Mitchell Moore informed players that he would be leaving next fall to assume the coaching vacancy at Iowa City High School. In his two seasons, Moore amassed a 7-4 regular season record, with the 2020 season being cut short due to Coronavirus concerns. Many consider the future of the Roughrider football program to be bright, with honorable mention QB Jamison Patton running the offense. Patton first appeared in varsity action in 2019 in a game against Ankeny Centennial, coming in for an injured Garrett Hutchinson.

      • The current head coach of the boys program is Sara Schwendinger, who will enter her 5th season in 2021. In the fall of 2020, the Riders lost their lone 2019 state qualifier, Jaxson Plumb, as he transferred to West Des Moines Valley. After the 2020 season, the Riders lost many seniors including Lucas George, Ean Cummings, and Peter Swanda. Roosevelt hopes to replace these losses with a young core containing several exciting 2020 underclassmen such asJonah Flynn, Logan Westin, Sam Harris, and Weston Wise. Flynn ranked number 4 on the team after running an 18:08 5k on October 4, 2020, at the WR Elite 5k.
