Tom Rosenthal (born 26 August 1986) is an English singer-songwriter and composer. His music has been described as "short, expertly crafted pop songs".[1]

Music[]

Rosenthal has released 5 albums to date, all of them self-released on his own label Tinpot Records.[2] Keep a Private Room Behind the Shop was released in 2011, and the latest is Denis Was A Bird in 2021, written about his father's passing a few years before. His songs have had over 350 million streams on Spotify[3] and his music videos over 100 million views on YouTube.[4] Rosenthal's works are currently published by Universal Music Publishing Group.

Rosenthal's music is typically accompanied by music videos with a diverse style. The music videos for "A Thousand Years", "As Luck Would Have It", "I Like it When You're Gone", "Lead Me To You", and "Fenn" are Vimeo Staff Picks.[5][6][7][8][9] The video for "Watermelon" was listed in the Top 30 music videos of 2014 by The Huffington Post.[10] Josie Long features in the video for "Lights are on But Nobody's Home".[11] Some of Rosenthal's videos have included crowdsourced clips based on a theme, such as people hugging for "Hugging You",[12] and parents/grandparents in "Just As".[13] He has written a number of songs about people and controversial events e.g. "I'm Yohan Blake" (about Yohan Blake and his athletics career against Usain Bolt),[14] "Hey Luis Don't Bite Me" (about Luis Suarez's biting incident),[15] "Melania" (about First Lady Melania Trump),[16] as well as a Christmas song, alongside The Michalaks for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos: "Dear Mr Amazon Lady".[17]

Rosenthal's tracks "Forgets Slowly", "Lights on But Nobody's Home", and "Take Care" featured in the Skins episode "Alo".[18][19] "Go Solo" was featured on the soundtrack of the German film Head Full of Honey (2014), the documentary Kid Poker (2015), the NFL documentary Hard Knocks, the film trailer for Felix and Meira, and the Netflix documentary The Least Expected Day: Inside the Movistar Team 2019.[20] "Go Solo" and "I Want You in My Dreams" were featured in the award-winning feature film Where We're Meant to Be.[21] "It's OK" features on the film trailers for Comet (2014),[22] Anesthesia (2014).[23] and L'odyssée (2016)[24] From 2016 through to 2018 his songs It's OK and Woes have been used on Neighbours.[25][26][27] "Hugging You" was used on season 2 of Virgin River.

Rosenthal has also written a number of soundtracks for short films and advertisements.[28] Rosenthall's song "Go Solo" featured in a TV commercial for the Renault Zoe E-TRON in 2021.[29]

Rosenthal produced a series of ten vlogs that started on 10 March 2016,[30] and finished on 19 April 2016.[31] The vlogs feature a mix of live performances and his family and friends. The final vlog included an interview with the comedian and actor Tom Rosenthal. He started a second series of vlogs on 13 August 2017[32] which ended on 29 December 2017.[33]

Rosenthal played his first concert at St Pancras Old Church on Wednesday 13 March 2019, followed by a tour around Europe and a gig at Union Chapel, with over 40 concerts in 2019.[34] Rosenthal continues to tour in the UK and the rest of Europe in 2020, although the tour has been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rosenthal wrote the short song "Life on Lockdown" about living during the COVID-19 pandemic for BBC Radio 4.[35]

Rosenthal recorded a cover version of the single "Home" in 2015,[36] and this went viral on TikTok in September 2020. Rosenthal preferred that listeners didn't confuse his covers with his original work, so he released a single of "Home" on 16 October 2020 followed by an album of covers called Stop Stealing the Covers! on 13 November 2020 under the pseudonym Edith Whiskers.[37]

Personal life[]

Rosenthal studied anthropology at Durham University.[when?] He currently lives with sign painter Bella Pace[38][39] and their two daughters Bess (nickname Bolu) and Fenn in London.

At age 4, Rosenthal's daughter Fenn composed the song "Dinosaurs in Love", which went viral in 2020 and became an internet sensation.[40][41] Both Rosenthal's daughters, Bess and Fenn, released an EP called "They're Awake!" on 27 March 2020.[42] Dinosaurs in Love was also released as an illustrated book in the USA on 20 October 2020, with a UK release on 21 January 2021.

Rosenthal co-founded the UK charity Grand Plan, which funds four grants of £1,000 to artists of colour looking to realise a creative project.[43]

In July 2021, Rosenthal was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.[44]
