Tosa jinja (土佐神社), also known as Tosa nimasu jinja, Tosa takakamo Taisha, is a Shinto shrine located in the east of Kōchi in Kōchi Prefecture in Japan.[1]
Japan's government has designated the sanctuary as an Important Cultural Property.[2]
History[]
There is no record of the foundation of the shrine. It was mentioned in the Kojiki and the Nihonshoki.[3] Ajisukitakahikone no mikoto (味鋤高彦根命) and Hitokotonushi no kami (一言主神) are enshrined.[4]
Tosa shrine was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Tosa province. [5]
From 1871 through 1946, Tosa was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Chūsha (国幣中社), meaning that it stood in the mid-range of ranked, nationally significant shrines.
