The second season of the American comedy-drama television series Ugly Betty started on September 27, 2007, in the United States and Canada and including a long, mid-season hiatus ran until May 22, 2008. The second part of the season began airing April 24, 2008.

Due to the fan base gained in the United Kingdom, the show's British broadcaster Channel 4 bought the UK rights to season 2 so they could begin airing it only a week later than the US. Due to the Writer's Strike of 2007, Ugly Betty went on a hiatus in Britain after the airing of episode "Bananas for Betty" (Episode 10). Channel 4 announced that Ugly Betty would return towards the end of 2008. When it returned to British television on September 5, 2008, it received 2.93 million viewers (12.9% share), according to overnight figures, which is a strong figure for Channel 4.^[1] This season was originally set to last 20 episodes, but due to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike, it was shortened to 18 episodes.

Season 2 was the last to be produced in Los Angeles before it was confirmed that the series would move to New York City to complement its setting in the next and last seasons.

Cast[]

All of the main cast from the show's first season returned for the second season, with the exception of Kevin Sussman (who had portrayed Walter). In addition, Christopher Gorham (Henry) and Judith Light (Claire) were promoted from guest star status to the main cast.

Advertising[]

Singer Mika contributed a track to the show. The song, "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)", a top-10 single in the UK, was used as the promotional theme for the second season, but with altered lyrics to say "Hey Betty, you are beautiful" in the song's chorus, along with a music video featuring the cast. This was the second time a Mika song had been featured on Ugly Betty, with a remix of "Grace Kelly" having already featured in "Punch Out".

After four episodes of the second season of Ugly Betty had aired in Australia, the Seven Network noted that special guests Victoria Beckham, Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell would be guest-starring in the near future. However, Australian viewers only saw Beckham and the others were not seen until the season finale aired. After several weeks, "Giving Up the Ghost" aired on July 2, 2008. Ugly Betty was then put on hiatus and the Seven Network announced they planned to show the rest of the episodes after the 2008 Summer Olympics. After only one episode, "Bananas for Betty", was shown on August 28, 2008, Ugly Betty was cancelled for no apparent reason. After several complaints for not finishing the season, the show went back to air on December 2, 2008, where it aired twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, eventually only airing the show on Thursdays. The final episode aired on Thursday, January 15, 2009.

Plot[]

Picking up from the season 1 finale, Ignacio is still in Mexico, Hilda is grieving for Santos, and Betty is keeping herself busy at Mode to distract herself from her unresolved feelings for Henry. Claire is in hiding after escaping from prison and Alexis wakes up from her coma with amnesia, having no memory of her gender transition or strained relationships with her family.

In Mexico, Ignacio becomes impatient and tells Betty that he is going to re-enter the country illegally. Betty reluctantly makes a deal with Wilhelmina to speed up his visa process in exchange for not telling Daniel about Wilhelmina’s affair with her bodyguard. Before Betty can inform Ignacio, he is kidnapped by Ramiro Vasquez, the abusive husband of Ignacio’s wife Rosa, whom Ignacio thought he killed. Now an old man, Ramiro vows to get revenge by having his son, Hector, shoot Ignacio. However, Ignacio is able to successfully plead with Hector to let him live. Shortly thereafter, Ignacio legally returns to New York.

Bradford takes advantage of Alexis's amnesia to pretend they are a happy family, much to Daniel’s annoyance. However, Daniel feels guilty at the role he played in the car accident and similarly hides the truth about the accident from Alexis. Wilhelmina also manipulates Alexis into convincing Bradford to proceed with the wedding. Alexis’ memory eventually returns and she tells Daniel that accident was her fault and that she is happy to start over.

At Mode, Betty is surprised to see Henry return. He explains that he decided to return to Mode because of the better pay but later confesses to Betty that Christina told him about the possibility of Charlie’s unborn child not being his. Although a paternity test later confirms that he is the father, Henry and Betty decide to date until Henry has to return to Tucson. However, Betty also finds herself reluctantly attracted to Gio, a sandwich maker. Gio becomes jealous of Betty’s relationship with Henry while Betty attempts to make the most of her time with Henry despite Ignacio’s and Daniel’s disapproval.

Meanwhile, Mode enters financial trouble when a major advertiser refuses to work with Mode because he is prejudiced against Alexis. Bradford reprimands Daniel for losing the account and favors Alexis to bring back new advertisers, much to Daniel’s chagrin.

Now knowing she is adopted, Amanda tries to forge a connection to Fey Sommers. She adopts Fey’s dog Halston and tries to build a career as a tabloid star. She then dedicates herself to finding her biological father. With clues provided by Wilhelmina and advice from a psychic, Amanda initially believes KISS frontman Gene Simmons is her biological father. Gene Simmons accepts her and the two briefly star in a reality show. However, Amanda discovers Gene is not her biological father and is only using her for fame.

Despite Claire’s attempts to stop the wedding, Bradford and Wilhelmina’s wedding moves forward although Bradford has a heart attack before he can complete his vows. Daniel learns that Betty helped Wilhelmina and angrily fires her. Claire is about to leave the country until she hears about Bradford being hospitalized and decides to visit him. The Suarez family helps her get to the hospital where Claire explains to Daniel why Betty helped Wilhelmina. Claire reconciles with Bradford and is arrested as she leaves the hospital. Daniel forgives Betty and welcomes her back to Mode. Bradford dies, leaving Wilhelmina powerless at Mode so Wilhelmina bribes the mortician to extract Bradford’s sperm so she can conceive a child to stake a claim in Meade Publications.

At Bradford’s funeral service, Daniel, Alexis, and Claire formally oust Wilhelmina from Mode. As revenge, Wilhelmina sends a computer virus to destroy Mode’s latest issue and recruits a majority of the staff to join her new fashion magazine, Slater. However, Slater falls apart due to a lack of funding. Wilhelmina then focuses on finding a surrogate to carry her and Bradford’s child to term. She selects Christina, who needs money for her estranged husband Stuart’s medical treatment. With Christina pregnant, Wilhelmina is able to force her way back to Mode.

As Claire’s murder trial begins, Amanda finds Fey’s diaries and discovers Fey secretly poisoned Claire with perfume in an attempt to get Bradford to divorce her. Claire’s poisoned perfume is gifted to Betty, who starts to behave erratically. Amanda eventually agrees to turn over the evidence and Claire is exonerated. Alexis wins control of Meade Publication through a paintball game and Claire launches Hot Flash, a women’s magazine aimed at older women, much to Alexis’ and Daniel’s embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Marc starts dating a sloppy fashion photographer Cliff St. Paul who attempts to help Marc overcome his shallow nature. Hilda begins dating Justin’s PE teacher, Coach Diaz, but becomes unsure about their relationship when she discovers Coach Diaz is married.

Daniel briefly dates Renee, Wilhelmina’s sister. Wilhelmina sabotages the relationship by messing with Renee’s medication, which causes Renee to become increasingly jealous and controlling. She accuses Betty of trying to steal Daniel and almost sets Daniel’s apartment on fire. When Renee calms down, she breaks up with Daniel to enter a psychiatric hospital.

Charlie returns from Tucson and gets in the way of Betty and Henry’s final days together. After advising Daniel to go to therapy to deal with his emotional problems over Renee, Betty decides to befriend Charlie. Charlie is initially hostile but when Charlie goes into labor at Betty’s house, the two put aside their differences. Henry and Betty have a tearful goodbye as he leaves for Tucson.

As the Mode vs. Elle magazine softball game approaches, Gio invites Betty to join him on a romantic trip to Rome while Henry returns to New York with a marriage proposal for Betty. A French orphaned boy reveals that he is Daniel’s son and the media storm, created by Wilhelmina, causes controversy for Mode. Wilhelmina successfully convinces Alexis to oust Daniel from Mode and to name her as the sole editor-in-chief.

At the softball game, Wilhelmina smugly reveals her new position to Daniel, who angrily walks off of the field with his son. Betty is hit in the head by a softball and has visions of what her life would be if she chose Gio or Henry. When she wakes up, she announces that she has made her decision. Betty is last seen going to the airport alone, heading towards an unknown destination.

Hilda sets up her own beauty salon with help from Gio and Henry, but after Betty hears Gio's romantic approach to how he would spend his last days with someone, she begins to think she and Henry aren't doing enough with their time left together.

The gap between "Bananas for Betty" on December 14, 2007 and "Zero Worship" was taken for three reasons:

1. Channel 4 was originally scheduled to take a three-week break at Christmas and resume episodes in January; this hadn't happened.

2. The 2007-2008 WGA strike meant only three episodes were left after the last episode, so Channel 4 decided it was pointless to resume them for just a couple of weeks in late January unless there were no more episodes to be produced. The WGA strike was resolved in February, so Channel 4 had promised viewers the series would return later on in the year with new episodes, but had no idea of when to return them, as the next six months (February–August 2008) was already filled.

3. Channel 4 decided to wait until September after Big Brother 2008 had finished airing, as the episodes took up approximately 100 minutes of airtime on a Friday night, which filled Betty's slot. Prior to Big Brother, March–May was filled with the whole first season of Dirty Sexy Money, which occupied Betty's slot whenever it was not on, and moved accordingly. Betty made its return to Channel 4 on Friday 5 September 2008 between the two season finale episodes of Big Brother. Unlike Desperate Housewives' 3rd-season premiere, Betty's timeslot for that week was not changed as the first show finished at 9pm and resumed with episode 2 at 10pm, meaning that Betty could return to its normal slot. Episodes played straight through into season 3 without a break, and viewers who were desperate to see the next episode of the show could see it one night earlier on a Thursday instead of a Wednesday in its usual 9:00pm slot on E4. T4 then introduced weekend encore sessions on Sundays which replayed that week's episode from 1:30 pm–2:30pm.

Soundtrack[]

Despite never having a physical or digital release a soundtrack of the series. This music was used during the second season of the series.
