The United Opposition of Serbia (Serbian: Удружена Опозиција Србије, romanizedUdružena Opozicija Srbije; abbr. УОПС or UOPS) was a big tent opposition coalition in Serbia, founded in 2020 as a successor of the Alliance for Serbia.[1]

History[]

Formation[]

The UOPS coalition was formed out of the Alliance for Serbia, an opposition coalition that played a significant role in the Serbian politics[2][3] from late 2018 until its dissolution in August 2020.[4] By mid-2020, speculations rose about the coalition's potential dissolution,[5] and in early August, it was confirmed that the alliance will be reformed.[6] On 10 August 2020, the United Opposition of Serbia was officially formed,[7][8][9] and all of then-participating parties of the Alliance of Serbia also participated in this coalition, except the Dveri, however they stated that they will cooperate with the coalition in the future.[10][11] Besides Dveri, the Civic Front (headed by the Do not let Belgrade d(r)own) and the Social Democratic Party opted to not join the coalition.[12] The UOPS also stated that they will only allow political parties that boycotted the 2020 election to join the coalition.[13][14] The coalition was challenged with many inter-party arguments over the time, which initially began even when the Alliance for Serbia still existed.[1]

Activities[]

Like its predecessor, the UOPS' most important plan was to end the rule of Aleksandar Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party.[1] The UOPS congratulated opposition's victory in Montenegro after the 2020 parliamentary election and hoped to form well relations between the UOPS and Montenegro's newly-formed government.[15][16] The coalition also adopted their foreign views as they were strongly orientated to the Serbian accession into the European Union.[17][18]

Dissolution[]

The coalition remained unstable and was challenged with inter-party problems, mainly in the People's Party.[19] In early December, claims rose to the public about the UOPS being dissolved, mainly due to the substantial disagreements between the two main party leaders, Dragan Đilas and Vuk Jeremić. On December 16, Đilas conjoined his party's forces with the Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) to create a common platform for political negotiations with the SNS-led government that will be mediated by the European Parliament.[20] The People's Party, led by Jeremić, considered this to be unacceptable since the PSG participated in the parliamentary election but also collected the signatures needed for participation under unclear circumstances.[21][22] On December 19, the vice-president of the People's Party, Zdravko Ponoš stated that the UOPS is "blocked", but shifted responsibility for further activities of the coalition to Đilas.[23] In late January 2021, the People's Party confirmed that the coalition has been already dissolved.[24] The former alliance basically split into two blocks: the first one gathered around Party of Freedom and Justice, and included Democratic Party, Movement of Free Citizens and Do not let Belgrade d(r)own among others.[25] The second block gathered around People's Party and included all the right-wing organizations of the former Alliance for Serbia.[26]

Members[]

There were 12 founding members of the United Opposition, including Đorđe Vukadinović, a non-partisan individual.
