Most visitors to Mozambique unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries can obtain a visa on arrival at all border posts or from one of the Mozambican diplomatic missions.[1]

Mozambique is part of SADC meaning that members of most other SADC countries do not require a tourist visa if visiting Mozambique for tourism purposes.

Visa exemption[]

Citizens of the following 11 countries can visit Mozambique without a visa for up to three months (unless otherwise noted):[2][3][4]

  •  Angola (30 days)[5]
  •  Botswana
  •  Cabo Verde
  •  Eswatini
  •  Malawi
  •  Mauritius
  •  Namibia
  •  South Africa
  •  Tanzania
  •  Zambia
  •  Zimbabwe

Visa waiver agreement for ordinary passports was signed with  Kenya in November 2018 and it is yet to come into force.[7]

Holders of diplomatic or service passports issued to nationals of Community of Portuguese Language Countries:[8] Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Timor-Leste, and also nationals of Argentina,[9] China, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Russia, Seychelles, South Korea, Turkey do not require a visa.

Visa waiver agreement for diplomatic passports was signed with  Rwanda in July 2018 and it is yet to come into force.[10] Visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and service passports was signed with  Thailand on 3 December 2018 and it is not yet ratified.[11]

Visa on arrival[]

Citizens of all other countries that are not visa exempt nor mentioned in the next chapter can obtain a visa on arrival at all border posts if they have documentation to prove they are traveling for leisure purposes (return ticket, accommodation confirmation or invitation letter).[1] This visa is valid for 30 days. Despite visas stating they are valid for only one entry visitors who have travelled to Eswatini and South Africa have found it was valid for two entries if still within its 30 day validity.[12] Maputo Airport recently began accepting credit card payments for visas.[13] Some visitors have been denied Visa On Arrival if their passports have not had 6 months validity.[14]

Visa required[]

Nationals of the following 6 countries must obtain a visa prior to arrival:[15][16][17][18][19][20]

  •  Bangladesh
  •  Eritrea
  •  India
  •  Pakistan
  •  Somalia
  •  Sri Lanka

However, citizens of these countries may obtain a visa on arrival if and only if they hold a printed confirmation from the Immigration Authority (SENAMI) Headquarters in Maputo, indicating that a visa has been approved before departure and travel for the Rovuma Basin Project.

In July 2021, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Land and Environment and Interior announced that Mozambique is developing a pilot system for issuing an electronic visa ( e visa ) for entry into the country.[14]
