Damage to the Severn Railway Bridge
  • October 15 – The Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad merge to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad; , former Erie president, is chosen as the president of the new railroad.[12]
  • October 25 – Barges collide with one of the columns of the Severn Railway Bridge (England) in heavy fog, causing two of its twenty-two spans to collapse. The steel and cast iron bridge is never repaired.
  • October 29 – Last State of Maine Express passenger service between New York City and Portland, Maine over the New Haven and Boston & Maine railroads.[9]
