The 1972 San Francisco State Gators football team represented San Francisco State University[note 1] during the 1972 NCAA College Division football season.

San Francisco State competed in the Far Western Conference (FWC).[note 2] The Gators were led by head coach Vic Rowen in his 12th year at the helm. They played home games at Cox Stadium in San Francisco, California. The team finished the regular season with a record of three wins and eight losses (3–8, 1–4 FWC). For the season the team was outscored by its opponents 250–323.
