Annalissa Firth,[1] known as Anna Firth, (born 1965 or 1966)[2] is a British politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Southend West after winning the by-election caused by the killing of Sir David Amess.[3] She is a member of the Conservative Party.

Early life[]

Firth originally comes from Leigh-on-Sea, born to an engineer and a teacher.[4] She obtained a law degree from Durham University, and worked for a time as a barrister.[4]

Political career[]

Firth served as a district councillor on Sevenoaks District Council for the area covering Brasted, Chevening, Sundridge and Ide Hill from May 2011 to her resignation on 7 January 2022.[5][6]

In the 2015 general election Firth stood for the Conservative Party in the parliamentary constituency of Erith and Thamesmead and came second to Labour's Teresa Pearce who had a majority of 9,525.[7] In the 2019 general election she stood again in Canterbury coming second to Labour's Rosie Duffield who had a majority of 1,836.[8]

She was first elected to parliament in the 2022 by-election held following the killing of David Amess in his constituency of Southend West. Following the precedent set in 2016 after the murder of Jo Cox and the ensuing by-election in Batley and Spen, no other major parties contested the seat.[9] Firth won the election with 12,792 votes and a majority of 12,220, with a turnout of 24.0% and 1,084 rejected ballots.[10]

Personal life[]

Anna Firth is married with three children.[4]
