Chinese wave piercing ship Beidiao 990 is the largest Chinese developed ship with wave-piercing hull. Designed by the 701st Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), the ship was built by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Company Ltd. (武昌船舶重工有限责任公司), and was launched on June 1, 2009. The ship has received NATO reporting name Kanwu[1][2][3][4]勘物 in Chinese, meaning Surveying Physics, because west first observed this ship when it was performing geophysics surveying missions.

Beidiao 990 has a deep-V shaped hull, and the entire ship is constructed of aluminum, the first of its kind in China. The high grade aluminum needed for the construction of the ship is supplied by Beijing Alumip Development Co., Ltd. (北京艾路浦科技发展有限公司). The name Beidiao (北调) 990 means North (Sea Fleet) Investigation (Ship) 990, and the ship is unique in that it also has a second name Dongyuan (东远) 01, meaning East Distant. Although capable being deployed as a platform for various missions such as surveillance, survey, and research, the ship is currently used as a troopship by the People's Liberation Army Navy (as of 2014) to rotate sailors and marines.
