Chaul is a town near Alibaug and Revdanda, the town was built around a maritime fort commissioned by the Portuguese in Goa and Bombay-Bassein, with their capital at Velha Goa. The Chaul Fort and it's companion Korlai Fort, now lie in ruined and abandoned conditions after the Mahratta Invasions of Bombay and Bassein.
