Chen Wenqing (Chinese: 陈文清; pinyin: Chēn Wénqīng; born 24 January 1960) is a Chinese politician, Minister of State Security of the People's Republic of China since November 2016.[1]
Early life[]
A native of Renshou, a rural farming and coal-mining district in Sichuan, Chen's childhood was influenced by the onset of the Cultural Revolution and the rise of the Red Guards movement.[2] His father was a police officer at the Sichuan branch of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), and for 20 years in a row, starting in 1951, the elder Chen was also awarded recognition as a Sichuan Province "progressive worker" by the Chinese Communist Party authorities.[2] There are no records publicly available about the elder Chen's role (if any) in the Cultural Revolution.[2]
Career[]
Chen Wenqing studied Law and Political Science at Southwest University in Chongqing, and, following his father, entered the Ministry of Public Security in 1984, where he worked for ten years; in 1988, he was decorated for bravery for his role in the capture of two armed criminals.[2]
In 1994, Chen was assigned to the Ministry of State Security (MSS), becoming Deputy Director at the Sichuan provincial state security department.[3] In 1998 Chen took over leadership of the state security department in Sichuan. He held this position until 2002, when he was appointed Chief Prosecutor at the Sichuan provincial People's Procuratorate. In 2006, Chen moved over to Fujian, where he served until 2012 as Deputy Party Secretary and concurrently head of the provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).[3] Following the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party at which Xi Jinping came to power, Chen went to Beijing to become one of the deputy secretaries of the CCDI.
He was appointed Party Secretary of the MSS in October 2016 and Minister in November.[1]
