The Daihatsu Sigra is a 7-seat mini MPV designed by Daihatsu and manufactured by Astra Daihatsu Motor in Indonesia since 2016 to be sold exclusively in the country. It is built on lengthened Ayla's platform and positioned below the Xenia as a more affordable MPV option for the Indonesian market, where the demands for 3-row MPVs are high.[4] It is also sold by Toyota as the Toyota Calya. The cars were built to meet the "Low Cost Green Car" regulation by the Indonesian government that abolished the luxury vehicle tax to the cars.

The Sigra was previewed by UFC, UFC2 and UFC 3 concept cars that was shown in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. The production model was unveiled on 2 August 2016 alongside the Calya and launched at the 24th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on 11 August 2016.[6] Both cars are manufactured at the Karawang plant, which the company claims the cars have 94% local content.[4][7]

The name "Sigra" was taken from the Sanskrit word meaning "quick response", while "Calya" means "perfection".[8]

Engines[]

Petrol engines
Chassis code Model Engine Transmission Power Torque Applications
B400 1.0 998 cc 1KR-VE DOHC 12-valve EFI straight-three with VVT-i 5-speed manual 49 kW (66 hp; 67 PS) at 6,000 rpm 89 N⋅m (66 lb⋅ft) at 4,400 rpm Sigra
B401 1.2 1,197 cc 3NR-VE DOHC 16-valve EFI straight-four with Dual VVT-i 5-speed manual
4-speed automatic
65 kW (87 hp; 88 PS) at 6,000 rpm 108 N⋅m (80 lb⋅ft) at 4,200 rpm Sigra/Calya

Some technologies used in the 3NR-VE engine are:

  • The application of intake valve type roller rocker arm, which reduces the friction produced when the camshaft is running.
  • The application of Dual VVT-i system, which adjusts timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts.
  • Improved cylinder head design.
  • Longer intake valve, which improves lower-end torque.[9]

For the 998 cc engine, besides the addition of VVT-i from the previous 1KR-DE engine used in 2013–2017 Ayla/Agya, the compression ratio of the engine has been increased from 11.0:1 to 11.5:1. A high-tumble intake port, a longer intake manifold and a micro spray injector has also been added to the engine. The valve lifters' surface roughness has been reduced by as much as 90%. All these measures are combined to improve fuel efficiency.[7][10]

Trim levels[]

The Sigra is available in six different trim levels: 1.0 D, 1.0 M, 1.2 X, 1.2 X Deluxe, 1.2 R and 1.2 R Deluxe. The 1.0 L variants are only available with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the 1.2 L variants are available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Calya is available in 1.2 E and 1.2 G trims, which are initially available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 1.2 E trim with automatic transmission was later discontinued in the facelift model.

Facelift[]

The Sigra received its facelift on 16 September 2019, along with the Calya. The facelift includes redesigned front bumper, longer rear license plate garnish, LED headlamps, additional storage below the gear shifter and electric retractable side mirrors on some variants.[11][12][13]
