Denmark–Portugal relations refers to the current and historical relations between Denmark and Portugal. Denmark has an embassy in Lisbon.[1] Portugal has an embassy in Copenhagen.[2] Both countries are members of the European Union and NATO. In 1984, Queen Margrethe II visited Portugal.[3] In 2008, Danish exports to Portugal amounted 2,5 billion DKK, and Portuguese exports to Denmark amounted 2,3 billion DKK.[4]

History[]

Relations between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of Denmark date back to the early 13th century, with the marriage of two Portuguese infantas with Danish royals. Firstly, Infanta Berengaria of Portugal, daughter of King Sancho I of Portugal, became wife of King Valdemar II of Denmark and queen consort from 1214-1221; she was mother to Danish kings Eric IV of Denmark, Abel of Denmark and Christopher I of Denmark. A few years later, a new marriage between the two royal houses followed, between Eleanor of Portugal, daughter of King Afonso II of Portugal, and Valdemar the Young, junior King of Denmark and queen consort between 1229-1231.

In 1701 to 1714, Denmark and Portugal fought against each other in the War of the Spanish Succession.[5] In the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark joined France in the war against the United Kingdom, Austria, Spain and Portugal.

On 14 December 1896, a treaty was signed between Denmark and Portugal, establishing diplomatic relations.[6]
