The New South Wales Department of Regional NSW is a department of the New South Wales Government responsible for the state's regional issues, building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land and overseeing the state’s mineral and mining resources.[2] It also administers the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
The department was established on 2 April 2020 to coordinate support for communities, businesses and farmers hit by the recent bushfires, floods and COVID-19 crises.[3] It assumed the functions of the Regions, Industry, Agriculture and Resources division from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.[4] It also brought together Department of Primary Industries, Local Land Services, Resources and Geoscience and regional coordination across the government.[1]
Structure[]
The Department is the lead agency in the Regional NSW cluster, led by the secretary, presently Gary Barnes,[1] who reports to the following ministers:[5][6]
- Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional New South Wales, presently The Hon. Paul Toole MP
- Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Western New South Wales, presently The Hon. Dugald Saunders MP
- Minister for Regional Youth, presently The Hon. Ben Franklin MLC
Ultimately the ministers are responsible to the Parliament of New South Wales.

Office locations[]
In June 2020, it was announced that the department will have four offices, located at Queanbeyan, Armidale, Dubbo and Coffs Harbour.[9] In January 2021, it was announced that the C.B. Newling building (Old Teacher's College) would be the location of the Armidale office and will house up to 100 new jobs in the New England region.[10]
