The Flag of the Silesian Voivodeship (Silesian: fana wojewůdztwo ślůnski, Polish: flaga województwa śląskiego, Czech: vlajka slezského vojvodství, German: flagge der woiwodschaft schlesein) is a bicolor of dark blue and gold.[3]

It consists of a dark blue field with a narrow gold stripe in the center. The colors of the flag comes from the Voivodeship's coat of arms, which was said to use Pantone Colors for the color palette.[3] It was adopted on 11 June 2001 by the Silesian Assembly and was made by Barbara Widłak.[1][2]

The variant flag is similar to the main flag, but the difference is that instead of a narrow stripe at the center, there is instead a gold eagle to the style of Lower Silesia’s eagle, without the cross on the wings, at the center.

History[]

Upper Silesian coat of arms

The flag and its color scheme came from Upper Silesia’s coat of arms, which has its origins in the 13th century in Opole and was first used by Casimir I. It was then changed into the Upper Silesian Province’s coat of arms in the 1920’s, and then into the current day voivodeship’s coat of arms. The coat of arms’ elements were then adapted to fit into a flag, thus creating the 2 variants of the voivodeship flag, with one taking the eagle and the other sticking to something simpler. The color scheme came from the same Opole coat of arms in 14th century, and was originally a lighter shade of blue and yellow with black claws.
