Avanceña worked as a nurse in the United States for four years. She returned to Davao shortly after her daughter was born in 2004.[3][4]

She was crowned Miss Davao Doctors College in 1988, and was first runner-up in the Mutya ng Dabaw beauty contest the same year.[5]

She served as hostess for President Duterte in several state occasions.[citation needed]
