Hrajel (Arabic: حراجل; also spelled Harajil) is a town and municipality located in the Keserwan District of the Keserwan-Jbeil Governorate of Lebanon. The town is about 42 kilometres (26 mi) north of Beirut.[1] It has an average elevation of 1,320 meters above sea level and a total land area of 1,230 hectares. Hrajel's inhabitants are Maronites.[2]

A hidden grotto can be found in Hrajel next to a river that feeds Nahr el Kalb. The grotto is rumored to be a far upward extension of the Jeita grotto but it is currently closed to the public. [1]

History[]

According to the 17th-century historian and Maronite patriarch Istifan al-Duwayhi, Hrajel was settled by Shia Muslims from Baalbek in the 16th century.[3] Ottoman tax records, which do not differentiate different Muslim groups from each other, indicate the village had 62 Muslim households and two bachelors in 1523, 40 Muslim households and 13 bachelors in 1530, and 49 Muslim households and eight bachelors in 1543.[4]
