Angelo Acosta (born February 15, 2002) is a Filipino rapper, singer, songwriter, and occasional actor.[1][2][3] He joined the second season of The Voice Teens[4] where he was mentored by apl.de.ap.[4][5]
Early and personal life[]
Acosta was born on February 15, 2002 in Quezon City, Philippines. He has a sibling named Lorraine; their father was murdered when he was at a young age and their mother Geraldine had to raise them on her own.[5]
Shortly after his dad died, he began to record in a studio from time to time. He transferred schools because they would often move out to another apartment almost every year, and was bullied initially.[5][6] In 2016, a fire broke on their neighbor's house in Navotas, forcing them to move out again, this time back to his mother's relatives in Quezon City.[5][6]
On a radio interview, Acosta said that he "grew up listening" to Gloc-9, Bruno Mars, and the Black Eyed Peas.[7][6] He also mentioned Drake, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Post Malone, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Polo G, and late rappers, XXXTentacion, Mac Miller and Juice Wrld as his main musical influences.
Career[]
Career beginnings and The Voice Teens[]
Struggling financially, he worked as an extra being paid "around 10 dollars a day" at age 15 to help his mom with expenses, while also saving money to go to the studio.[5][6] He met a casting agent who persuaded him to try for VTRs, and appeared on a few commercials[8][9] that landed him minor/cameo roles on television and on a film that was shown on Netflix.[2]
In 2018, Acosta began uploading music under the name Angelo Acosta[3] with a song entitled "Swerte" on his Facebook page.[10] He continuned trying his luck to go on "every audition opportunity" to promote his songs and was rejected "for atleast one hundred times" prior his The Voice stint.[11] He was then discovered by "Curve Ent.", a label who manages Ely Buendia[12] and kakie, who signed him to a one-year recording deal after he reached out to their landline & submitted demos.[2]
In 2020, Acosta participated in the blind auditions of the second season of The Voice Teens, he sang Shanti Dope's hit "Nadarang" and managed to make Bamboo Mañalac and apl.de.ap turn. He picked the latter as his coach.[4] He got eliminated in the Battles after performing "Imposible" by KZ Tandingan with opponent CZ Baylosis, who emerged as the winner.[13] He became the first hip-hop artist to get into a coach's team and reach the Battles across all eight seasons of the local The Voice Philippines franchise.[14]
