Life and career[]

2001–2015: Early life and career beginnings[]

Jeon So-mi in May 2016

Ennik Somi Douma (Korean전소미; Jeon So-mi) was born on March 9, 2001, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada to a Korean mother, Jeon Sun-hee, and Dutch-Canadian father, Matthew Douma. She has a younger sister, Evelyn Maverick Douma (born in 2009). In September 2001, six-month-old Jeon and her parents moved to Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, South Korea after her mother developed homesickness.[5] She made her first-ever television appearance at age four in an interview with her father on KBS News while clearing snow within their neighbourhood.[6] Jeon initially attended a school for foreigners before transferring to  [ko] at her father's suggestion to practice Taekwondo.[5] Due to her mixed descent, Jeon often faced with bullying and discrimination at school and wanted to "blend in" and look more "Korean" by dying her hair black, change her eye color and receiving plastic surgery on her eyes and nose.[7][8] In 2013, she appeared on the Children's Day Special of KBS2's Let's Go! Dream Team Season 2 as one of the representatives of Seoul Midong Elementary School's Taekwondo demonstration team, where she paired with Park Joon-hyung.[9][10] That same year, she sang and made an appearance in a music video for English education.[11] In August 2014, Jeon, her mother and her grandmother briefly appeared on an episode of KBS2's Hello Counselor and had a cameo role in the 2014 film Ode to My Father.[12]

Jeon's passion for singing and dancing began during her elementary school days. As she wished to pursue a career relating to her passion, Jeon auditioned at various entertainment companies in South Korea starting in her fourth year in elementary school, of which both her mother and father were supportive.[13] In 2014, Jeon joined JYP Entertainment after auditioning with 2NE1's "Lonely", leading her to appear in Got7's "Stop Stop It" music video with other fellow female trainees.[14][15] In May 2015, Jeon participated in Mnet reality survival program Sixteen, where she was pitted against 15 other trainees from JYP to secure a spot in the label's next girl group, later called Twice. However, she was eliminated in the final round and continued as a trainee under the label.[16][17]

2016–2017: Produce 101 and debut with I.O.I[]

Jeon So-mi in December 2016

In January 2016, Jeon represented JYP in the reality survival program Produce 101. She finished in first place with 858,333 votes and debuted on May 4 with the project girl group I.O.I, which soon released its first EP, Chrysalis, under YMC Entertainment.[18][19] On August 29, Jeon collaborated with I.O.I band-mates Choi Yoo-jung and Chungha and DIA's Ki Hui-hyeon for the digital single, "Flower, Wind and You".[20][21] In October, Jeon was selected as the new host for SBS MTV's The Show, along with UP10TION's Wooshin.[22]

On January 9, 2017, it was confirmed that Jeon signed a formal contract with JYPE to manage her solo activities on television.[23][24] Soon after, she joined the cast of KBS2's Sister's Slam Dunk 2.[25][26] Jeon's activities with I.O.I ended following the group's disbandment on January 29, 2017. On March 9, Eric Nam and Jeon released a collaborative digital single titled "You, Who?".[27] On May 12, Jeon debuted with Unnies, the project girl group created through Sister's Slam Dunk 2. The group released the lead singles "Right?" and "Lalala Song".[28]

On March 28, 2017 Jeon was cast in KBS' web entertainment program Idol Drama Operation Team. She played a high school student named Bo-ram. Final filming for the show took place on May 9.[29][30][31][32] The seven cast members formed a project girl group called Girls Next Door and released a single as part of the show's soundtrack. The song, titled "Deep Blue Eyes", was co-written and co-composed by B1A4's Jinyoung and released on June 14 through Warner Music Korea.[33][34] In November 2017, Jeon featured on Jun. K's digital single titled "Nov to Feb".[35]

2018–present: Departure from JYP and solo debut[]

Jeon at her debut showcase in 2019

On August 20, 2018, JYP announced that after mutual agreement, Jeon had terminated her contract with the company and left the label.[36] The following month, she signed an exclusive contract with YG Entertainment's subsidiary label The Black Label, home to South Korean R&B singer Zion.T.[37]

On February 25, 2019, The Black Label revealed that Jeon was preparing to make her debut as a solo artist with a lead single produced by Teddy.[38][39] Her debut single "Birthday" was released on June 13 with an accompanying music video.[40] She made her first music show appearance as a solo artist on MBC's Show! Music Core on June 15, performing both "Birthday" and its B-side "Outta My Head".[41]

In 2019, Jeon was confirmed as part of the cast for Law of the Jungle in Chuuk.[42] In 2020, MBC announced that Somi would be joining the show Lose If You're Envious as an MC.[43][44]

On March 28, 2020, the reality series I Am Somi, was released on The Black Label's YouTube channel, showing a daily v-log series of the idol.[45][46] In the sixth episode, Jeon revealed that her comeback had been delayed and the series cut short from travelling restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.[47] On July 14, it was confirmed that Jeon would make her comeback on July 22 with a new single titled "What You Waiting For".[48][49] On July 20, in conjunction with the release of "What You Waiting For", Jeon signed with Interscope Records, which will represent her alongside Universal Music Group, outside of Asia.[50][51] On August 6, 2020, Jeon won her first music show trophy with "What You Waiting For" on Mnet's M Countdown.[52]

On May 4, 2021, Jeon and the members of I.O.I celebrated their fifth debut anniversary with a reunion livestream show called "Yes, I love it!".[53] On July 23, it was confirmed that Jeon would make her comeback on August 2 with a new single, titled "Dumb Dumb".[54] Its music video gained 10 million views in under 24 hours on YouTube and 20 million views in two days, both personal records.[55]

Personal life[]

Jeon graduated from  [ko] on February 3, 2017 and Hanlim Multi Art School, majoring in Practical Music and Vocal, on February 7, 2020.[56][57][58][59][60][61] Jeon holds a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo but could not gain the fourth degree due to her young age.[62]

Artistry[]

Influences[]

During her childhood, Jeon's favorite musicians were Cyndi Lauper, Rihanna and 2NE1.[63] Growing up, Jeon also listened to the music of South Korean singer Seo Taiji, whom she described as an artist who "rocked the music industry", thanks to her mother's influence.[64] She also cited Lee Hyori as a role model in her career as a female soloist. Lee successfully showcased multiple different concepts throughout her career, ranging from mature to bright, which Jeon views as an inspiration for her own image as an artist.[65] Jeon also described 1TYM leader and CEO of The Black Label, Teddy Park, as a key mentor and influence. She shared that "Teddy is without a doubt, the most successful songwriting and composing figure in K-pop, period. Period. When I first saw him, it was like seeing a unicorn up close [...] it was unreal. I was in awe because growing up I used to listen to his music and dream of becoming a singer. [...] One piece of advice Teddy gave me was to not only just focus on being a great singer and musician, but also focus on being a great person and that’s what I exactly aim to be."[66]

Songwriting[]

Jeon began songwriting in her third year in middle school. Her first self-composed release, "Outta My Head" (어질어질), was created while promoting as a member of I.O.I.[13] While casually humming the tune following her move to The Black Label, Teddy asked if she had written it. With encouragement and help from in-house producers such as 24,[69] the bright melody soon turned to a mid-tempo R&B song and was included on her debut single album, Birthday.[70]

Jeon tends to record two versions of songs she writes, each version in different languages. After grasping the "feel" of the song in English, the lyrics are changed into Korean. She explained, "For example, if the lyric is 'orange', it will be changed to 'how long' (in Korean), making similar pronunciations". Jeon attributed the longer wait between comebacks to this recording process: "That is why it takes longer. Recording it like this makes the result really good!".[71] The original lyrics to the hook of her single "Dumb Dumb" were "Imma say it like it is/ cut the bullsh*t/ you dumb dumb"; in the official version, they have been translated to Korean.[63]

As a soloist under The Black Label, Jeon has gained greater artistic and creative control over her music and career. She stated, "There are a lot of great producers, songwriters, creatives and people I truly respect here. I've matured both professionally and personally a lot by learning from them and seeing how they do things up close. But there is still a lot to go. I’m still definitely learning".[66] She credits Teddy as an important mentor in her growth as a songwriter: "Every songwriter and producer has their own way to express themselves artistically and Teddy is helping me to find my own way."[66]

Endorsements[]

In July 2017, Jeon was selected for her first solo endorsement deal to be a campaign model for the Coca-Cola Korea beverage brand Fanta.[72][73]

In January 2018, Somi participated in the Reebok Classic SS18 campaign, "Always Classic".[74] In September 2018, the Wetskills Foundation appointed Jeon as an International Wetskills Ambassador.[75]

In February 2019, Jeon became a spokesperson for ABC Mart's shoe brand Nuovo.[76] In March 2019, Jeon and Ong Seong-wu were selected to advertise for lifestyle sports brand Beanpole Sports.[77] In May 2019, Jeon became the brand ambassador for cosmetics brand Shiseido Korea.[78]

In May 2021, Jeon was selected as a model for the Louis Vuitton 2021 Eyewear Global Campaign.[79]
