June Louise Squibb (born November 6, 1929) is an American actress. She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, among other accolades for the film Nebraska.

Personal life[]

Squibb was born in Vandalia, Illinois. Her mother, JoyBelle, was a silent film pianist. Her father, Lewis, was an insurance agent.[1][2] Squibb married Edward Sostek, the marriage ended in divorce.[when?] She married Charles Kakatsakis (1959–1999), an acting teacher. They have a son, Harry, a filmmaker who made his short film Admissions. Squibb converted to Judaism in the 1950s and considers herself Jewish.[3][4] When asked about ageism in show business, Squibb has stated, "Well, it's like anything else. I always feel, rules are meant to be broken."[5]

Career[]

Squibb worked in musical theatre at the St. Louis Muny, and trained at the Cleveland Play House and HB Studio. While at the Cleveland Play House, she starred in productions of Marseilles, The Play's the Thing, Goodbye, My Fancy, The Heiress, Detective Story, Antigone, Ladies in Retirement and Bloomer Girl. She played Dulcie in the 1958 Off-Broadway The Boyfriend and starred in the 1959 Off-Broadway revival of Lend an Ear.[6] She replaced Electra for her Broadway debut in the original production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Squibb appeared in The Happy Time, which opened in 1968 and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical. In between these periods, she did modeling work for romance novels. She appeared in the 1995 Broadway for Sacrilege. In 2012, she played Stella Gordon in Dividing the Estate at the Dallas Theater Center and received standout reviews.[7] She played Old Josie in the 2018 Broadway of Waitress.[8] Squibb starred opposite Bruce Dern in Nebraska and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.[9][10] She was inducted into the Cleveland Play House Hall of Fame in 2015.[11] She starred in the Disney+ film Godmothered.[12]
