Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The Bulgarian entry was selected through a combination of an internal selection to select the artist and a national final to select the song, organised by the Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT). After a copyright issue with winning song of the national final, "Kismet", the song was replaced with the runner-up. Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankulov represented Bulgaria with the song "Samo shampioni", which failed to qualify from the second semi-final of the competition, placing 12th and scoring 45 points.

After failing to qualify to the final for the sixth consecutive time, Bulgaria withdrew from the 2014 contest,[1] and will not return until 2016.

Before Eurovision[]

Artist selection[]

On 26 September 2012, BNT announced that they were in the process of determining the structure of the selection process.[2] On 10 February 2013, the broadcaster announced that a jury committee made up of BNT producers had internally selected Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankulov to represent Bulgaria in Malmö. Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankulov previously represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 where they placed fifth in the final with the song "Water".[3][4]

National final[]

A national final was organised to select Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankulov's song. Five songs were submitted to BNT by the performers and the committee selected three songs for the national final.[3] The competing songs were presented on 17 February 2013 during the BNT 1 programme Nedelya x 3 and were aired on the broadcaster's television and radio mediums for a two-week period.[5]

The final, broadcast on BNT 1 and BNT World as well as online via the broadcaster's website bnt.bg and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv, took place on 11 March 2013 at the BNT studios in Sofia and hosted by Dragomir Draganov.[6][7] All three competing songs were performed by Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov and the winning song, "Kismet", was determined by a 50/50 combination of points awarded by public televoting and a five-member jury panel. The jury consisted of Maria Ganeva, Margarita Hranova, Yasen Kozev, Nikolai Yanchovichin and Georgi Andreev. There was a tie between "Samo shampioni" and "Kismet", however the televoting results took precedence which resulted in "Kismet" being selected.[8] In addition to the performances of the competing songs, 2013 Swiss Eurovision entrants Heilsarmee performed as guests.[6]

Song change[]

On 11 March 2013, BNT announced that "Kismet" had been replaced with the runner-up of the national final, "Samo shampioni", due to not being able to secure the copyrights for the song from Jonatan Tesei, one of the apparent authors of the song that BNT was misinformed about. The broadcaster's possession of copyrights for the entry are required under the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest.[9]

Bulgaria was allocated to compete in the second semi-final on 16 May for a place in the final on 18 May.[10] In the second semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Bulgaria would perform 7th, following Malta and preceding Iceland.[11] The Bulgarian performance focused on Todorova and Yankulov playing drums and joined on stage by a bagpipe player wearing a Western Bulgarian traditional feathered mask, and three backing vocalists dressed in folk costumes.[12]

Bulgaria failed to qualify from the second semi-final of the competition, placing 12th and scoring 45 points.[13][14]
