Moldova participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The Moldovan entry was selected through O melodie pentru Europa 2013, a national selection that consisted of two semi-finals and a final, organised by the Moldovan broadcaster TeleRadio-Moldova (TRM). Aliona Moon represented Moldova with the song "O mie", which qualified from the first semi-final of the competition and placed 11th in the final, with a score of 71 points.
Before Eurovision[]
O melodie pentru Europa 2013[]
O melodie pentru Europa 2013 was the national final format developed by TRM in order to select Moldova's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. The event took place at the TRM Studio in Chișinău, hosted by Cătălin Josan and Evelina Vârlan with Lucian Dumitrescu reporting from the green room, and included two semi-finals and a final to be held on 12, 14 and 16 March 2013, respectively.[1][2] All shows in the competition were broadcast on Moldova 1 and Radio Moldova as well as online via the broadcaster's official website trm.md. The final was broadcast online at the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.[3]
Format[]
The selection of the competing entries for the national final and ultimately the Moldovan Eurovision entry took place over two rounds.[4] The first round occurred on 17 January 2013 where a jury panel shortlisted twenty-four artists and sixty songs from the received submissions to proceed to the second round, the televised national final. Entries were assessed on criteria such as voice quality, stage presence and strength of the composition.[5] 12 semi-finalists competed in each semi-final on 12 and 14 March 2013. Seven songs qualified to the final from each semi-final based on the combined votes from an expert jury and public televoting results. The fourteen qualifying entries competed in the final on 16 March 2013 where the winner was selected by the 50/50 combination of an expert jury vote and a public televote. In the event of a tie, the entry that receives the highest score from the expert jury vote was declared the winner.
Competing entries[]
Artists and composers had the opportunity to submit their applications and entries separately between 13 December 2012 and 10 January 2013. Artists were required to be of Moldovan nationality. Songwriters could hold any nationality and could submit more than one song, however songs were required to be in either Romanian or English.[6] At the conclusion of the submission deadline, 49 artist applications and 126 valid songs were received by the broadcaster.[7] A jury consisting of Nelly Ciobanu (singer, 2009 Moldovan Eurovision entrant), Vladimir Beleaev (composer), Geta Burlacu (singer, 2008 Moldovan Eurovision entrant), Vali Boghean (instrumentist, actor, composer), Tatiana Cergă (performer), Valentin Dînga (composer), Victoria Tcacenco (professor at the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy) and Nicu Țărnă (singer) selected 24 artists and 60 songs out of the received submissions on 17 January 2013 to advance. The 24 artists each selected one of the 60 songs and were allocated to one of the two semi-finals, each containing 12 entries.
On 17 February 2013, Dara withdrew from the competition due to a mismatch between her artistic style and the selected songs and was replaced by Diana Staver. On 3 March 2013, "Hi-Ho" performed by Denis Latîşev was withdrawn from the competition and replaced by the song "Coma" performed by Margarita Ciorici.[8]

Semi-finals[]
Two semi-finals took place on 12 and 14 March 2013. In each semi-final twelve songs competed and seven songs qualified to the final based on the combination of votes from a public televote and the votes of an expert jury. The jury that voted in the semi-finals included Nicu Țărnă (singer), Geta Burlacu (singer, 2008 Moldovan Eurovision entrant), Nelly Ciobanu (singer, 2009 Moldovan Eurovision entrant), Tatiana Cergă (performer), Ludmila Climoc (Orange Moldova representative), Dorel Burlacu (composer and conductor), Vali Boghean (instrumentist, actor, composer) and Victoria Tcacenco (professor at the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy).
In addition to the performances of the competing entries, guest performances featured during the shows, with 2005 and 2011 Moldovan Eurovision entrants Zdob şi Zdub and 2012 Moldovan Eurovision entrant Pasha Parfeny performing in semi-final 1, and 2008 Moldovan Eurovision entrant Geta Burlacu and 2013 Russian Eurovision entrant Dina Garipova performing in semi-final 2.

Final[]
The final took place on 16 March 2013. The fourteen songs that qualified from the preceding two semi-finals competed and the winner was selected based on the combination of a public televote and the votes of an expert jury. The jury that voted in the final included Nicu Țărnă (singer), Adrian Beldiman (composer, Radio Moldova chief music editor), Vali Boghean (instrumentist, actor, composer), Igor Dînga (musician, composer), Eugen Boico (General Director of Publicis Moldova), Tatiana Cergă (performer), Mihai Moldovanu (Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova), Dorel Burlacu (composer and conductor), Iurie Mahovici (composer), Nelly Ciobanu (singer, 2009 Moldovan Eurovision entrant) and Victoria Tcacenco (professor at the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy). In addition to the performances of the competing entries, 2013 Belarusian Eurovision entrant Alyona Lanskaya performed as a guest. "A Million" performed by Aliona Moon was selected as the winner.[11]

Preparation[]
On 18 March 2013, a meeting was held at the TRM headquarters with the resulting decision to change the language of the song from English to Romanian.[12] The Romanian version of the song was titled "O mie".[12]
At Eurovision[]
Moldova was allocated to compete in the first semi-final on 14 May for a place in the final on 18 May.[13] In the first semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Moldova would perform 12th, following Belarus and preceding Ireland.[14] On stage, Aliona Moon was accompanied by 2012 Moldovan entrant Pasha Parfeny on piano and three backup dancers.[15] The Moldovan performance featured Aliona Moon wearing a 5 metre long white dress that displayed projections and a rising podium that lifted the singer higher towards the end of the song.[15]
Moldova qualified from the first semi-final, placing 4th and scoring 95 points.[16][17] At the first semi-final winners' press conference, Moldova was allocated to perform in the first half of the final.[18] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Moldova would perform 3rd, following Lithuania and preceding Finland.[19] Moldova placed 11th in the final and scored 71 points.[20]
In Moldova, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on Moldova 1 and Radio Moldova, with commentary provided by Lidia Scarlat.[21][22]
The national jury that provided 50% of the Moldovan vote in the first semi-final and the final consisted of: Liviu Ştirbu, Adrian Beldiman, Vitalie Rotaru, Larisa Zubcu and Vlad Mircos.[23] The Moldovan spokesperson in the grand final was Olivia Furtună.[24]
