Kolatak (Armenian: Քոլատակ; Azerbaijani: Kolatağ) is a village de facto in the Martakert Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, de jure in the Kalbajar District of Azerbaijan. The village has an ethnic Armenian-majority population, and also had an Armenian majority in 1989.[2]

Situated on a mountain above the village is the 13th-century Armenian monastery of Hakobavank, also known as Metsaranits Monastery.

History[]

During the Soviet period, the village was a part of the Mardakert District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.

Historical heritage sites[]

Historical heritage sites in and around the village include the 7th/13th-century monastery of Hakobavank (also known as Metsaranits Monastery), the Kachaghakaberd fortress in the mountains to the south - an important fortress in the medieval Armenian Principality of Khachen, a 9th/13th-century khachkar, the 12th/13th-century Koshik Anapat Church, a 12th/13th-century fortress, cemetery and khachkar, a 13th-century church, a 16th/18th-century cemetery, 17th-century Mandur Church, the 17th/18th-century Hndzan village, a 16th/18th-century village and the medieval Berdakar Fortress.[1]

Economy and culture[]

The population is mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. As of 2015, the village has a municipal building, a secondary school, and a medical centre.[1]

The village had 273 inhabitants in 2005,[3] and 250 inhabitants in 2015.[1]
