The High Commissioner of Australia to Fiji is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the High Commission of the Commonwealth of Australia to Fiji. Since 2014, the Deputy High Commissioner also has responsibility for relations with Tuvalu, currently Amy Crago. The High Commissioner is also Australia's Permanent Representative to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, which is headquartered in Suva. The position has the rank and status of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and is currently held by John Feakes.

Posting history[]

As fellow members of the Commonwealth of Nations, diplomatic relations between Australia and Fiji are at governmental level, rather than between Heads of State. Thus, the countries exchange High Commissioners, rather than Ambassadors. Between 1987 and 1997, this was not the case; after the Coups of 1987, Fiji was deemed to have been expelled from the Commonwealth, but rejoined after the promulgation of a new constitution in 1997. Hence, from 1987 until 1997, the representative of the Australian Government in Fiji was an Ambassador.

Between 2009 and 2012, Australia had no diplomatic relationship. In July 2012, the governments agreed to exchange High Commissioners, ending the three-year gap,[2] with an Australian High Commissioner commencing in December 2014.[3]

Australia established diplomatic relations with Tuvalu on its independence in 1978 and the High Commission has been cross-accredited to Tuvalu since then.
