List of Barbie films

This article lists all the computer-animated films based on Barbie, an American fashion doll and media franchise produced by toy and entertainment company Mattel in 2001 with the direct-to-video release of Barbie in the Nutcracker.[1][2]

These films were broadcast on Nickelodeon in the United States and released on home video formats by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment until 2017 when it was put on hiatus in Mattel's attempt to focus on expanding the franchise to other media such as web series and television series, especially through streaming services and online platform.[3][4][5] In 2020, Mattel revamped the films as animated "specials" and by making them fall under the same canon of the streaming television series, Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures.[6][7] Additionally, a live-action adaptation of the toyline is currently being produced through its film division with the association of LuckyChap Entertainment and Heyday Films to be distributed by Warner Bros. in the United States on July 21, 2023.[8][9]

The beginnings (2001–2009)[]

Animation for the films below were provided by Mainframe Studios under the name Mainframe Entertainment (2001 to 2009) and Curious Pictures (2006). The beginnings of the Barbie films marked the adaptations of pre-existing stories, as well as experimentations with original storylines.

Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)[]

Barbie in the Nutcracker tells the story of a young girl named Clara who gets a beautiful wooden nutcracker from her aunt Elizabeth as a Christmas gift. Barbie narrates the story to her younger sister Kelly. As the story continues, later that night the toy comes alive to protect Clara from the evil Mouse King’s soldiers. Clara gets shrunk to toy size and along with her brave Nutcracker goes in search of a magical Sugarplum Princess to reverse the spell.

Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)[]

Barbie as Rapunzel is based on the classic tale. Barbie plays Rapunzel who is trapped in a tall tower by an evil witch. Hidden from the outside world Rapunzel spends much of her day painting and dreaming of a happier life. After many years alone Rapunzel goes on a journey with her friends Penelope and Hobie to find her happily ever after.

Barbie of Swan Lake (2003)[]

Barbie of Swan Lake revolves around the young daughter of a baker named Odette. Barbie plays Odette and one day follows Lila, a unicorn into an enchanted forest. Odette gets turned into a swan by a wicked wizard who is trying to overthrow the Fairy Queen.

Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (2004)[]

Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper is based on the classic Mark Twain story. One day a chance encounter between the blonde Princess Anneliese and brunette commoner Erika begins a lifelong friendship. The two friends soon discover the Queen’s advisor, Preminger, has more than one evil plan to take more power for himself. Only Princess Anneliese’s new friend Erika knows how to help her.

Barbie: Fairytopia (2005)[]

Barbie: Fairytopia is about the story of Elina who lives in a magical meadow. Elina is a wingless sprite who lives in a flower with her best friend Bibble. Many of Elina’s winged friends lose their flying abilities and become weak due to the evil Laverna. Eline sets off to save her meadow and her friends by tracking down Azura, the Guardian Fairy.

Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (2005)[]

Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus tells the story of a talented ice skater named Princess Annika. When her family and village are attacked by the evil Wenlock she embarks on a journey to the Cloud Kingdom on the back of her flying pegasus, Brietta. Together, they uncover family secrets and make a plan to defeat Wenlock to save their people.

Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)[]

Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia is a sequel to Barbie: Fairytopia where Elina was rewarded for her bravery with her own new pair of wings. Elina has to battle Laverna again now that her soldiers kidnapped the young Prince of the Merfold, Nalu. Laverna threatens to pollute the sea unless Nalu gives up the secret location of a magical Immunity Berry. Elina, Bibble, and mermaid Nori work together to find Nalu and stop Laverna one more time.

The Barbie Diaries (2006)[]

The Barbie Diaries is a film about Barbie and her best friends Tia, Courtney, and Kevin in high school. The four sophomores stick together as they face high school challenges. Barbie strives to land her dream job at the school’s TV station but has to battle the school’s most popular girl, Raquelle, and juggle her boy crush feelings at the same time. Barbie leans on her magic diary to help strengthen her confidence and go for her dreams.

Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)[]

Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses is about the story of a widowed King Randolph and his 12 daughters. Barbie plays Princess Genevieve, the king’s most outgoing daughter. To ensure the daughters grow up to learn to behave like proper ladies the King enlists his less fortunate cousin, Duchess Rowena to teach the girls about royal etiquette.

Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow (2007)[]

Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow follows Elina to fairy school where she learns fairy magic and dancing. Once again Laverna comes up with an evil plan to stop the fairies from performing their annual rainbow dance. Elina and her classmates have to learn to set their differences aside and unite to stop Laverna once again.

Barbie as the Island Princess (2007)[]

Barbie as the Island Princess is about the story of shipwrecked Rosella who is played by Barbie. Rosella grows up on the island with her animal friends who help watch over her. One day Prince Antonio arrives and encourages Rosella and her pet friends to explore civilization. Together they discover a plot to take over the kingdom and do what they can to try to save the day.

Barbie: Mariposa (2008)[]

Barbie: Mariposa is a film about Flutterfield, a distant kingdom in Fairytopia. The fairy community is protected by Queen Marabella’s magical lights. Facing internal tension the Queen’s own attendant, Henna wants the power of the Queen and tries to take over the kingdom for herself. Mariposa and her friends, Rayna and Rayla, take it upon themselves to venture into enemy territory to find an antidote for their beloved Queen.

Barbie & the Diamond Castle (2008)[]

Barbie & the Diamond Castle is about the value of friendship. Barbie and her best friend Teresa tell a story to Stacie about a beautiful kingdom with a diamond castle. Alexa and Liana who are good friends travel together on a dangerous journey. The friends love music and with the help of song, they overcome challenges on their journey and learn how powerful friendship can be.

Barbie in A Christmas Carol (2008)[]

Barbie in A Christmas Carol is a film about the meaning of Christmas and helping those who are less fortunate. Barbie’s younger sister, Kelley, longs to stay home on Christmas eating cookies, sipping hot cocoa, and enjoying the fireplace instead of attending the hospital’s annual charity ball. Barbie tries to change her mind as she is visited by the three spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

Barbie Presents: Thumbelina (2009)[]

Barbie Presents: Thumbelina is a film about friends working together to save the environment. A magical group of Twillerbee are one with nature and have amazing abilities to help plants and flowers flourish. However, a mean girl named Makena damages Thumbelina’s favorite area of wildflowers for sport. On top of that, a construction company also threatens the Twillerbee’s land, and only Thumbelina and her friends have the courage to try to stop them.

Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009)[]

Barbie and the Three Musketeers is about the heroic tale of four brave girls who strive to break barriers and defend their royal family. Corinne longs to become a fighter and protect the French royal family just as her father has all his life. Corinne is disappointed to discover girls are not allowed to be musketeers. Instead, Corinne and three scullery maids, Viveca, Aramina, and Renee all share the same desire to fight as musketeers and defend the royal family. All four are trained in secret by a swordmaster and soon put their talent to work to save Prince Louis.

The first revamp (2010–2015)[]

Animation for the films below were provided by Mainframe Studios under the name Rainmaker Entertainment (2010 to 2015), Technicolor (2011 and 2013), and Arc Productions (2013). The first revamp of the Barbie films include the storylines moving away from the classic princess stories to focus on more modern themes like fashion, music, and on stories revolving around Barbie's sisters.

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale (2010)[]

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale is about a Malibu adventure among the ocean waves. During a surfing tournament, Merliah who believes she is an ordinary teen has an unexpected experience and learns her true identity, a mermaid princess of Oceana. With new dolphin and mermaid friends, Merliah tries to save the Oceana kingdom and her mother Calissa. The team of new friends needs to work together to find three magical ocean items in order to save everyone.

Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale (2010)[]

Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale is a film set in Paris. Barbie and her French poodle, Sequin travel to Paris to visit her Aunt Millicent who owns a designer house. Barbie discovers times are tough and the fashion house will likely shut down due to slow business. With the help of Millicent’s assistant, Alice, the two need to come up with some bold creative ideas to save the business.

Barbie: A Fairy Secret (2011)[]

Barbie: A Fairy Secret is about the story of fairies dwelling in the human world and the power of friendship. Ken is kidnapped by fairies and Barbie’s fashion stylist friends reveal they are also fairies and they may know where Ken has been taken. Barbie sets out to find Ken with her rival Raquelle in a secret fairy world and bring him back. Along the way, they face challenges and discover fairy magic but most of all they find the power of friendship.

Barbie: Princess Charm School (2011)[]

Barbie: Princess Charm School is a film about a young waitress named Blair Willows. She is a kind and generous girl with a pure heart. Blair is accepted into Gardania’s prestigious Princess Charm School where she can learn to be a proper princess or royal lady. Blair struggles to fit in at the prestigious school but she perseveres and soon the selfish Dame Devin recognizes Blair as possibly being the kingdom’s missing heiress to the throne... Blake must find her kingdoms crown before it's too late

Barbie: A Perfect Christmas (2011)[]

Barbie: A Perfect Christmas is another film about the Christmas holiday. Barbie and her sisters Stacie, Skipper, and Chelsea pack up and head to New York to visit Aunt Millie. Along the journey, unforeseen complications pop up and the sisters find themselves in the festive town of Tannenbaum where their trip takes a musical turn in the picturesque snow-covered mountains.

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 (2012)[]

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 follows the surfing mermaid Merliah Summers to Australia as she competes in a huge surfing competition. While Merliah is away from Oceana a mermaid with evil intentions, Eris tries to take over the throne. Merliah and her friends are pushed to the limit as her love for both worlds are challenged.

Barbie: The Princess & the Popstar (2012)[]

Barbie: The Princess & the Popstar is a film about following your passion for singing and dancing. Princess Maribella meets her favorite popstar Keria and they discover they have a lot in common including their beautiful looks. The two decided to swap places but living the other life isn’t as easy as they thought it would be and they begin to find more value in being the best version of themselves.

Barbie in the Pink Shoes (2013)[]

Barbie in the Pink Shoes is another film about dancing. Barbie plays the role of Kristyn, a ballet dancer. One day when Kristyn tries on a pair of sparkly pink shoes she gets swept away with her friend to a secret ballet world. In this new fantasy world, Kristyn learns about an evil Snow Queen that she must defeat by dancing her favorite ballets. Kristyn dances to famous ballets of Giselle and Swan Lake.

Barbie: Mariposa & the Fairy Princess (2013)[]

Barbie: Mariposa and the Fairy Princess is a film about making new friends and helping others. The butterfly fairy Mariposa travels to the fairy kingdom of Shimmervale as the royal ambassador from Flutterfield. She intends to make peace with the Crystal Fairies and during her visit. While meeting the royal family she makes a new friend with King Regellius’ daughter, Princess Catania. Soon the two uncover an evil plot by Gwyllion and her pet bat Boris to destroy Shimmervale by turning the crystals into rocks and must rely on their new friendship to save the kingdom and make peace.

Barbie & Her Sisters in A Pony Tale (2013)[]

Barbie & Her Sisters in A Pony Tale is a film about a riding academy in the Swiss Alps. Barbie, Stacie, Chelsea, and Skipper take off to Switzerland for a summer horseback riding adventure. Barbie hopes to find a horse to bring back home to Malibu. Stacie is out to prove she’s an excellent rider, Chelsea wants to ride the big horses, and Skipper isn’t so thrilled about being outdoors.

Barbie: The Pearl Princess (2014)[]

Barbie: The Pearl Princess is about a deep-sea adventure where secrets and pearls are buried in the deep. Lumina is a mermaid that has the ability to make pearls come to life by dancing and changing colors. Her other hidden talent is being a talented hairdresser. With a Royal Ball, only hours away, she will use all her talents to discover not just herself but also the long-lost heiress of the kingdom.

Barbie and the Secret Door (2014)[]

Barbie and the Secret Door is a film about the young princess Alexa who accidentally finds a secret door in the royal garden. Although Alexa would rather be reading her books, she now finds herself starring in her own adventure. In the magical new realm behind the secret door, Alexa becomes the protector of the kingdom and must save the land from the evil Malucia who is trying to steal the land’s magic power.

Barbie in Princess Power (2015)[]

Barbie in Princess Power is about a super hero adventure which involves a magical butterfly which kisses a princess named Kara and, to her surprise, gave her superpowers. With a new name, Super Sparkle, Kara flies around saving the day. Not everyone likes her new superpowers. Her jealous cousin finds the magical butterfly and becomes Dark Sparkle, her new enemy.

Barbie in Rock 'N Royals (2015)[]

Barbie in Rock ‘N Royals is a musical film about Princess Courtney and famous rock star Erika Juno. The two accidentally swap lives with the Princess landing in Camp Pop and the Rock Star landing in Camp Royalty. While the two camps try to reverse the mistake, the two girls make the most of their unique situation and begin new friendships.

The second revamp (2015–2017)[]

Animation for the films below were provided by Mainframe Studios under the name Rainmaker Studios (2016 to 2017) and Arc Productions (2015 to 2016). The second revamp of the Barbie films tried to begin exploring Barbie with different careers (namely treasure hunter, gymnast, secret agent, space explorer, golf cart driver, and coder) as well as Barbie's fictional life to coincide with the Barbie Vlogger web series.

Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure (2015)[]

Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure is about the story of sisters, mystery, and adventure with furry friends. When Barbie and her sisters Skipper, Stacie, and Chelsea head back to their hometown of Willows, they find themselves rummaging through their grandma’s attic. The group finds a treasure map of their local town and sets out to discover a hidden chest of jewels but finds the real treasure is their friendship.

Barbie: Spy Squad (2016)[]

Barbie: Spy Squad is a film about ordinary friends working together to achieve the unexpected. Barbie, Teresa, and Renee who are talented gymnasts are recruited as undercover agents. With the team’s special skills and working together, they track down a jewel thief who is responsible for a long series of robberies and prove they can be great spies.

Barbie: Star Light Adventure (2016)[]

Barbie: Star Light Adventure is about a space adventure in a faraway universe. Barbie flies through space on her hoverboard with her furry sidekick Pupcorn. One day, the bright stars begin to dim and flicker. To save the stars, Barbie flies to a new planet to unite with a team of heroes on a mission to save the twinkling stars. If Barbie listens to her heart and follows her instincts then she just might be the leader the universe needs.

Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase (2016)[]

Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase is a film about teamwork. Barbie and her sisters travel to a tropical paradise for Chelsea’s dance competition. The group and their puppies have some free time before the dance and decide to visit a nearby Dancing Horse Festival. When they explore the Horse festival the girls get separated from their puppies and must find them before the big dance.

Barbie: Video Game Hero (2017)[]

Barbie: Video Game Hero is a film where Barbie gets magically transported into her favorite video game and becomes a roller-skating character with blonde pigtails. She befriends another character in the game called Bella who is a roller-skating princess. The two girls work together playing level after level to defeat an evil emoji trying to take over control of the game.

Dreamhouse Adventures specials (2017–present)[]

Mainframe Studios solely provided the animation for the films at present. The latest revamp follows the Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures animated series, officially becoming part of its canon.

Barbie: Dolphin Magic (2017)[]

Barbie: Dolphin Magic is a film about a fun underwater adventure. Barbie and her sisters meet up with Ken at his summer job where he researches dolphin life at a nearby coral reef. Barbie and her friends discover rare rainbow dolphins that visit annually and also learn about how fragile the reef can be. They make it their mission to try saving the local reefs and meet a mermaid in the process.

Barbie: Princess Adventure (2020)[]

Barbie: Princess Adventure is another musical film about Barbie traveling to the country of Floravia to meet Princess Amelia. Barbie and Princess Amelia come up with a plan to switch places since Amelia is nervous about becoming Queen. A rival prince tries to unravel their secret as Barbie and Amelia try to make the switch back before Amelia’s coronation ceremony. Along their journey, Barbie and Amelia find their voice and sing several new songs.

Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday (2021)[]

Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday involves Barbie and her family going on a tropical cruise for Chelsea’s 7th birthday. When the boat crosses the International Date Line, Chelsea thinks her birthday got skipped. Chelsea then sets out on her own jungle quest to find a magic gem and get her birthday back.

Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams (2021)[]

Barbie: Big City Big Dreams is a film about striving to be your best. Malibu Barbie travels to New York City to join an elite performing arts program and meet Brooklyn Barbie. The two immediately become best friends and enjoy spending their time singing and exploring the big city of New York. The two are very talented but find themselves in a competition for the top spot to sing a solo in Times Square. They will discover later that a friendly competition is more about becoming your best and sharing the spotlight.

Barbie: Mermaid Power (2022)[]

Barbie: Mermaid Power is about Barbie "Malibu" Roberts, Barbie "Brooklyn" Roberts, Skipper, Stacie, and Chelsea as they turn into mermaids to help Isla (from Dolphin Magic) in the underwater world of Pacifica. The Barbies take part in a competition to be the power keeper, a mermaid who can protect their world with the power of the four elements.
