They were founded in 1995 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and played their first competitive match in the inaugural 1996 Major League Soccer season. In 2006 the club was renamed to the New York Red Bulls.

Kaku signed with the club in February 2018 for a club record fee of $6.25millon.
Jozy Altidore was sold to Villarreal CF for a club record fee of $10million in 2008.
