  1. "I Get a Kick Out of You"
    Released: August 3, 2021

Love for Sale is the second collaborative album between American singers Tony Bennett (his sixty-first and final studio album) and Lady Gaga (her seventh studio album), following Cheek to Cheek (2014). It is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2021, through Columbia and Interscope Records. The album was recorded between 2018 and early 2020, and consists of cover versions of jazz standards by American composer Cole Porter, to whom the record is a tribute.

"I Get a Kick Out of You" was released as the album's lead single in tandem with its official announcement on August 3, 2021, followed by two live performances at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Background[]

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga first met in 2011 at the Robin Hood Foundation gala in New York City.[1] After that, Bennett asked Gaga to sing a duet with him on his album Duets II, so they recorded the song "The Lady Is a Tramp".[2] The next year, he confirmed to Rolling Stone that Gaga wanted to record a jazz album with him.[3] The recording happened between June 2013 and early 2014.[4] Cheek to Cheek was released in September 2014 and debuted atop on the US Billboard 200, with 131,000 copies sold in its first week.[5] It received generally positive reviews,[6] winning a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.[7] Bennett told Billboard that they were inspired by Porter's 1936 musical, Red, Hot and Blue, for a possible sequel to Cheek to Cheek. He also said: "we're gonna do two albums in a row with her (Gaga). We'll have to try and do that as soon as possible, just as a follow-up for a second album."[8] Upon the announcement of Love for Sale, on August 3, 2021, Gaga commented on Twitter:

The day we released Cheek To Cheek in 2014, Tony Bennett called me and asked me if I wanted to record another album with him, this time celebrating the songs of Cole Porter. I'm always honored to sing with my friend Tony, so of course I accepted the invitation.[9]

In February 2021, an article in AARP the Magazine revealed that Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016.[10]

Recording and composition[]

Love for Sale is a Cole Porter tribute album.

Recording sessions for the album took place at Electric Lady Studios in New York,[11] between 2018 and early 2021. It serves as a tribute to Cole Porter and is Bennett's final album. In Love for Sale, Gaga sings solo on "Do I Love You" and "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)", while Bennett's solo consists of "So in Love" and "Just One of Those Things".[12]

Release[]

Love for Sale is set to be released on October 1, 2021. The standard editions of the album contain ten songs, while the digital editions, the Target exclusive editions, and the international deluxe editions contain two additional songs, "I've Got You Under My Skin and "You're the Top". The international deluxe CD includes two poster fold booklets, photos, and a bonus live album, Cheek to Cheek Live!, containing songs from the television special of the same name.[13] Cassettes are set to be released with differing artworks in pale pink and grey colors; apricot copies will be sold exclusively in the United Kingdom.[14][15][16] Besides the normal black iteration, the standard edition's vinyl records are also set to be released in yellow color and on 12" picture disc.[17][18][19] The deluxe edition's vinyl will be available as part of an international double vinyl box set, which also includes the duo's previous collaborative album, Cheek to Cheek, along with a turntable slipmat and a vinyl cleaning cloth, both with pictures of Bennett and Gaga printed on them.[20] A limited edition collectible box set comprises the Love for Sale standard vinyl, a custom embossed sketchbook featuring sketches by Tony Bennett, a pencil/sharpener set, photos, lithographs, watercolor prints, concert poster reprints and a re-printed letter.[21]

Artwork[]

The album cover graphic of the standard and digital editions include a photo of Bennett holding a sketchbook that depicts a profile sketch of Gaga, while Gaga is leaning down fixing Bennett's bowtie.[12][22] People who pre-order the album in any format from Lady Gaga's online store have a chance to win the cover art signed by Gaga and Bennett.[23] The Target versions of the CD and vinyl feature an alternative artwork, showcasing Gaga wearing a black gown, with Bennett standing next to her in tuxedo, holding her arm.[24][25]

Promotion[]

On July 2, 2021 the duo performed in New York for MTV Unplugged,[26] and they also presented a pair of shows at Radio City Music Hall, on August 3 and 5, called One Last Time: an Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.[27] Shortly after the two shows, it was announced that Bennett retired from performing live, a decision that was made on "doctors' orders".[28]

"I Get a Kick Out of You" was released as the first single from the album on August 3, to digital retailers,[29] and its accompanying music video premiered on MTV on August 6.[12] It shows Bennett and Gaga recording the song, while they smile at each other and hug several times emotionally.[30] Rolling Stone's Jon Blistein described the song as "delightfully classic", and thought that "the two vocalists exude plenty of chemistry".[31] Athena Serrano from MTV thought that "Bennett doesn't fail to deliver his strong vocals even at 95."[22]

Commercial performance[]

Before its release, Love for Sale appeared at number three on the Apple Music Pre-Add Chart for the week dated July 30–August 5, 2021.[32]
