Luis Miguel Romero Fernández M.Id, (born 16 June 1954) is a Spanish priest of the Catholic Church and serves as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Biography[]

Romero was born in Palencia, Spain, and raised in Huelva.[1][2] He entered the Idente Missionaries in 1972[2] and was ordained to the priesthood on September 11, 1981. He received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Zaragoza in 1987.[2]

Romero worked for 25 years in Latin America, including a stint from 1996 to 2009 as chancellor and rector-chancellor of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja in Ecuador.[3][4] In 2007, Romero was named president of the (Inter-American Organization for Higher Education).[5]

In December 2019 he was named vicar of Hispanic ministry for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre in Long Island, New York.[3] Pope Francis appointed Romero auxiliary bishop of Rockville Centre and titular bishop of Egara on March 3, 2020.[2][6] His consecration as bishop, initially scheduled for 16 April 2020,[7] was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[8] He was consecrated as a bishop on 29 June 2020.[9]
