The Afghan Ministry of Defense (Dari: وزارت دفاع ملی افغانستان‎, Pashto: د افغانستان ملی دفاع وزارت‎) is an organ of the Government of Afghanistan, overseeing the Afghan Armed Forces. It was Afghanistan's ministry of defense. Its headquarters was located in Kabul.[2]

The defense minister is nominated by the President of Afghanistan and the National Assembly makes the final approval.

One of the functions of the Defense Ministry is the continuance of disarming insurgent groups through programmes such as the Afghan New Beginnings Programme. These militant groups coalesced from warlords and former army personnel after the collapse of the Najibullah government in 1992. Despite the Taliban takeover of Kabul in August 2021, Bismillah Khan Mohammadi continues to claim his title as Minister of Defense.[3][4][5]
