Naruto (鳴門市, Naruto-shi) is a city located in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on March 15, 1947. In the quinquennial census of June 1, 2019, the city had a population of 56,222 (2005: 63,200).[1] With a total area of 135.66 km², the population density is 414 persons per km².
The Naruto whirlpools are between Naruto and Awaji Island in Hyōgo.[2] The Ōtsuka Museum of Art is the largest exhibition space in Japan.[3]
Ryōzen-ji and Gokuraku-ji, the first two of the 88 temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, are in Naruto, along with Tōrin-in and Ōasahiko Jinja.
Naruto has the home stadium of professional football team Tokushima Vortis and of baseball team Tokushima Indigo Socks.
