The Z14 class was a class of steam locomotives built for the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia. [1][2][3] The class was introduced in 1865 as the 23 class, reclassified in 1889 as the G class, and rebuilt in 1903-05 as the Cg class, prior to renumbering as the Z14 class in 1924. [4]
The 23 class was introduced in 1865 as 2-4-0 passenger locomotives. A first batch of 9 locomotives, divided between the then isolated northern section of the NSW railways emanating from Newcastle, and the Southern and Western lines emanating from Sydney, had 5'9" driving wheels. A second batch of four locomotives, introduced in 1970 for the Southern and Western lines only, had driving wheels reduced to 5'6" to better suit the steep (1 in 30) grades in some sections of those lines.[5]
After storage for ten years at Eveleigh locomotive works, the G23 class were rebuilt as 4-4-0s with Belpaire boilers and four wheel Bissell truck leading bogies. They were renamed the Cg class in view of the similarity of the rebuilt locomotives to the C class (later Z12 class) 4-4-0s of 1879. [6] The Cg class were renumbered in the 1920s as the Z14 class.
The last in service was 1412 which was retired in 1948. The last recorded as condemned was 1405 in 1950. [7] Scrapping of the class commenced in 1937 and was concluded in 1952.[8]
