Ostravice (German: Ostrawitz, Polish: Ostrawica) is a municipality and village in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,400 inhabitants. It is a popular summer holiday resort under the Moravian-Silesian Beskids to which it serves as a gate.

History[]

Ostravice was first mentioned in 1581. Initially it was lying only on the left bank of the Ostravice river, within Moravia. In 1951 the southern part of the village was split from Ostravice and joined with Staré Hamry municipality, whereas the northern part of Staré Hamry was split from it and joined with Ostravice, and so both municipalities now lie on both banks of the Ostravice river, as opposed to the previous situation when they were lying concurrently on the opposite banks of the river.
