Pinjara Khubsurti Ka (transl. Cage of Beauty) was an Indian television romantic drama series that aired from 24 August 2020 to 6 August 2021 on Colors TV, completing two seasons.^[1] Season 1 starred Riya Sharma and Sahil Uppal as Mayura Dubey and Omkar Shukla, while Season 2 featured them as Mayura Goswami and Omkar Vashisht.^[2] The initial plot was inspired by the zee tv series Ardhangini.^[3]

Plot[]

Mayura Dubey, is a beautiful girl who hates how people only like her beauty and not her skills or accomplishments. Her sole wish in life is to get out of the cage of her beauty and be liked for who she is. Omkar Shukla, the king of the marble business industry, wants a beautiful wife. He comes across Mayura, wanting her as his bride. He has a backward and creepy mentality of believing beauty should be protected.

Mayura refuses to marry Omkar, who creates issues for the Dubeys to pressure her. Mayura meets and befriends his brother Piyush, and finally weds Omkar. As she is an aspiring doctor, Omkar opens a clinic but keeps condition to only treat women, angering Mayura, who gets held captive in a golden cage by him. She escapes with Piyush's help. Later, Omkar scars her face with marble.

Horrified, Mayura returns to Dubeys and keeps her scar hidden under a veil. Omkar then kills his brother Piyush. Mayura wants revenge, and disguised as his bride, she reveals her marble face. Over her, Omkar chooses Aishwarya who plans to use lava disco ball to kill Omkar. Aishwarya kidnaps Omkar, and escapes. Mayura and Omkar are left hanging on from a tree by the cliff after she rescues Omkar from the car's trunk.

Omkar realizes Mayura's love for him and expresses his gratitude towards her. Unfortunately, she falls off the cliff and is presumed dead. Distraught, Omkar realizes his mistakes, reforms and accepts his love for Mayura. She is in fact alive but loses her memory.

6 months later[]

Searching for Mayura, Omkar meets Dr. Neel who saved and also loves her. Mayura participates in the same competition where Omkar is chief guest. He finds Mayura, but her memory has been lost. Her dad, Akhilesh begs Neel to marry her. Neel kidnaps Mayura and forcefully makes her marry his brother, Kundan. But Omkar turns out to be the groom, and has married Mayura. Neel shoots him, but Omkar survives.

He unites with Mayura, and is following the superstitions of Guru Maa. Mayura is pregnant and eventually delivers a girl, named Tara. Omkar keeps her away from Mayura because Guru Maa tells him her scar is a bad omen for the baby. Omkar forces Mayura into plastic surgery. She fakes her surgery, but when Omkar finds out, he ousts Mayura away from Tara and his house.

5 years later[]

Mayura suffers from schizophrenia and celebrates Tara's 5th birthday while hallucinating her and Omkar. Tara faints during the celebration. While Omkar tends to her needs, Tara sneaks out to play with the other kids. Mayura then makes an effort to find her. Mayura notices Tara helplessly standing in middle of road and rushes to save her. While Tara is unconscious, Omkar searches for her. Mayura is filled with joy when she notices Tara in the hospital. When Omkar unleashes his wrath upon the doctor, a terrified Tara escapes and lands in trouble. But Mayura sees her and rushes after her. Omkar frantically searches for Tara. On the other hand, Mayura and Tara are entrapped inside a pipe tunnel while escaping heavy winds. Desperate, they cry for help. Mayura soon learns that Tara is her daughter. Having been forced to stay away from her daughter for five long years, Mayura resolves to get her daughter back. Meanwhile, a suspicious Omkar rushes to the hospital.

Mayura disguises as a nurse for Tara's treatment and enters Omkar's house. When Mayura rescues Tara from meeting with a terrible accident, her disguise is exposed in front of Omkar, but Mayura manages to hide her disguise. Disguised, Mayura bonds with Tara as Omkar investigates Mayura's identity.

Meanwhile, Mayura plans to elope with Tara after finding Tara's passport. In an attempt to take Tara away from Omkar, Mayura convinces Tara to travel with her for an adventurous trip. When Mayura and Tara are caught by the police, Omkar refuses to lodge an FIR against her. However, he warns Mayura to stay away from his daughter, but the doctor suggests letting her stay for Tara's moral support.

Omkar's mother learns that Mayura is not in the hospital and warns her son about it. Mayura is left in shock when she learns that Omkar plans to harm her family. While she leaves on the pretext of buying Tara's medicines, Mayura is unaware that Omkar is following her. When Omkar takes Tara to the hospital for a checkup, Mayura plots to kidnap her child with the doctor's help. Omkar accuses Mayura of Tara's disappearance and plans to have her arrested. Eventually, Mayura removes her disguise and leaves Omkar in utter shock. As Omkar plans to take Tara away, Mayura sits on a strike in front of his house. Later, Mayura reveals images of her marriage in front of the media, one of which is found by Tara.

With the start of a 14-day trial for custody of Tara, Mayura meets her for the first time. Tara reciprocates the emotional bond for her mother while Omkar watches them in agony. Mayura wants Tara to enroll her name at the school, but Omkar is against this idea. He wants Tara to take online classes to protect her from the outside world and tries to scare her from joining the school. When Omkar and his goons storm at Mayura's house, she stealthily escapes with Tara. However, she sustains a grave injury and falls unconscious. As advised by his mother, Omkar plans to return to Mayura for everything she has done to him and retrieve Tara from her by regaining power and wealth. After Mayura secures Tara, she seeks help from Vishakha, who advises her to work on herself and improve her lifestyle. Omkar visits Vishakha and asks her to reveal Mayura's address, but she refuses. Enraged by her refusal, Omkar threatens to burn down Vishakha's office. It is revealed that Vishakha is using Mayura to retaliate against Omkar for her brother's death. Omkar tries to warn Mayura but fails miserably. He then feigns blindness, who then tries to convince Mayura about Vishakha. The police find Vishakha's body. The police return to Omkar's house to look for Vishakha and some clues related to the case. Despite all the clues pointing towards Omkar, Mayura continues to take a stand for Omkar. When Omkar is found with suspicious objects at the crime scene, he is arrested by the police. He runs away from the police station but is hit by the ACP's car. While Mayura believes that Omkar is innocent, Raghav tries to convince Mayura that if Omkar is indeed innocent, he should surrender himself so that Raghav can help him prove it. Mayura lashes out at Raghav when he tries to keep her away from Omkar. The concern shown by Mayura towards Omkar infuriates Raghav, and he resolves to drive Omkar from Mayura's life. It is revealed that Vishakha is alive and is conspiring against Omkar and Mayura with Raghav. Omkar and Mayura are surprised when Vishakha reveals that she planned everything with the help of Raghav. When Omkar tries to fight back, Vishakha warns him by showing his family in her captivity. Mayura and Omkar escape from captivity and flee. Unfortunately, Vishakha takes Omkar's parents hostage and confronts them. Vishakha kills Omkar and Mayura with a sword. Before dying, Omkar says that they will be reborn and will complete their incomplete love story.

20 years later[]

Mayura and Omkar are reincarnated as Mayura Goswami and Omkar Vashisht. Mayura is a rich and pampered girl, while Omkar is a middle-class guy who works very hard to earn money. Omkar and Mayura's first interaction ends up in a conflict. After a rocky start, Omkar and Mayura meet again when the former starts his job as a waiter in a hotel that belongs to Mayura's father. Soon, Mayura comes up with a plan to punish Omkar for offending her. Mayura sings a song during the Karaoke night, but Omkar unplugs the music system when he notices a short circuit, leaving Mayura furious. While Omkar begs Mayura for a second chance, she fires him for his act. When Mayura plans to go out on a trip with her friends before the college reopens, she takes Omkar with her as her bodyguard to teach him a lesson. They spend a night in a damaged shed in the middle of a terrifying night. Next day, Omkar forcefully takes Mayura in his arms and carries her inside the hotel. Things get awkward when Mayura's father arrives at the hotel and witnesses Omkar carrying Mayura in his arms, but Mayura handles the situation. To participate in the fencing competition, Mayura goes against her father's will and sneaks out of the house. As Mayura loses the sword-fighting competition against Omkar, she indulges in a heated argument with her father and plans revenge against Omkar. During the academic debate, Mayura and Omkar enter into a volatile argument. Later, Mayura and Ishaan meet head-on with Omkar for a merciless ragging session. Mayura bets with her friends to make Omkar fall in love with her and exact revenge on him. Later Vishakha comes backs into Omkar and Mayura's life. She goes to Mayura's Birthday Party but does not meet them. It is Revealed That Ishaan is Vishakha's son. She got bail after 20 Years as she was jailed For killing Mayura and Omkar 20 years ago. Mayura realizes her previous birth's enemy and faints at her birthday party. Mayura then remembers her past birth and tries to make Omkar remember it. Mahesh and Bela trap Omkar into a Fake harassment Case But Mayura finds out the truth and gets Omkar bailed. Vishakha has a proposal for Ishaan and Mayura but Mayura rejects it. Her father accepts the proposal because Vishakha says that she'll fund the project only if Mayura marries Ishaan. Vishakha plans that when Ishaan and Mayura will marry she will send them to London and get her killed in a road mishap and make it look like an accident. Later Omkar goes to Jabalpur and he finds out about his past birth. Some goons appointed by Vishakha attack him when he video calls Mayura. Some saints help him regain consciousness and Omkar leaves to Bhopal in a delivery truck to stop Ishaan and Mayura's wedding. Meanwhile, Bela gets Mayura ready for her Haldi Ceremony. When Vishakha approaches Mayura to apply Haldi on her, Vishakha slips and falls, spilling the Haldi and thus, her Haldi ceremony remains incomplete. Mayura's father gets enraged and Vishakha tells the pandit to prepare for the wedding as Ishaan will wed Mayura without any pre-wedding rituals. Mayura is then taken to the mandap and she acts like she faints. Then, she regains consciousness and in a series of events, Omkar comes to Mayura's home and beats up the security guards. He stops the wedding and Mayura feels elated to see Omkar. Vishakha then reveals her plan of the road mishap and Mayura's father realizes his mistake and then Vishakha challenges Mayura to sword-fight with a talented Fencer. Omkar saves Mayura and Vishkha holds everyone in her captivity. She plans to burn Mayura and Omkar alive. Ishaan realizes Vishakha's misdeeds and helps Mayura and Omkar escape. The police come and arrest Vishakha for her wrongdoings and Mayura's Father gives her hand in marriage to Omkar and at last they both marry and promise in a unique way to be free from every pinjara/cage forever and have a romantic moment, ending the series.

Production[]

The role of Mayura was to be played by Shivangi Khedkar and she shot a promo of the show which went on air.^[10] However, due to creative differences, she quit the show and later Riya Sharma was cast to play Mayura.

The series switched time slots with Bawara Dil on 1 July 2021, moving to a later broadcast time. The change was made after the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council stated there was too much violent content in the show.^[11] Its last episode was telecasted on 6 August 2021 owing to low trp ratings and was replaced by Balika Vadhu 2.
