Rankings of universities in China

As of 2020, China had the world's second-highest number of top universities in several most cited international rankings including the QS World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

In 2015, Double First Class University Plan, a tertiary education development initiative, designed by the People's Republic of China government, was launched, representing a new way of ranking universities in China. In 2017, the full list of the Double First Class University Plan was published, and 140 universities have been approved as the 'Double First Class' universities by the central government of China, representing a reshuffle in the rankings of China's most prestigious universities.^{[citation needed]} The plan aims to drive the overall development of universities by building and strengthening their disciplines and faculties, and eventually develop the listed 'Double First Class Universities' into world-class universities by 2050.^[6]^[7] In February 2022, with the approval of the State Council of China, the list of "Double First Class Universities" was updated and released by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission. Apart from 140 universities remained, 7 universities have been newly added into the Double First Class University Plan, and the previous university classifications within the plan have been abolished.^[8] The 147 Double First Class universities account for less than 5% of the total 3,012 universities and colleges in China, representing the most elite part of Chinese higher education institutions.^[9]

Regardless of universities in China being involved in a variety of university rankings, the Ministry of Education of China does not advocate or recognize any ranking published by other institutions.^[10]

Double First Class Universities[]

In 2022, with the approval of the State Council of China, the updated list of "Double First Class Universities" was released by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission. According to the Phase 2 List of the Double First Class University Plan, a total of 147 universities have been recognized as Double First Class Universities, with 7 universities newly added, and the previous university classifications have been abolished.^[8] The 147 Double First Class Universities represent the top 5% of higher education institutions in China.

China had the world's second-highest number of top universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the US News and World Report Best Global University Ranking, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities and the Three University Missions Ranking.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

In the 2021 CWTS Leiden Ranking, China has the largest number of universities including in the ranking with 221 out of 1,225 universities from 69 countries.^[11] The University Ranking by Academic Performance 2020-2021 shortlisted 3,000 research universities from 123 countries in the ranking: China tops the list, with 485 universities.^[12] China is also the most-represented nation overall in the SCImago Institutions Rankings list with 549 universities.^[13]

There were 24 Chinese universities on lists of the global top 200 in the 2021 Shanghai Ranking's ARWU, behind only the United States in terms of the overall representation.^[14]

Regional[]

China has dominated the QS BRICS University Rankings and the THE's Emerging Economies University Rankings since its inception, claiming 7 of the top 10 spots for both rankings. China is also the most-represented nation overall.^[15]^[16] In 2020, China tops the QS Asia University Rankings list with over 120 universities including in the ranking, and five Chinese universities appear in the Asia Top 10, which is more than any other country.^[17]
