Seventeen (Korean세븐틴), also stylized as SEVENTEEN or SVT, is a South Korean boy band formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2015. The group consists of 13 members: S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino.

The group performs as one group, and the members are divided into three sub-units, each with a different area of specialization: 'Hip-Hop Unit', 'Vocal Unit', and 'Performance Unit'. Since its debut, Seventeen has released three studio albums and ten extended plays.

Seventeen is considered a "self-producing" idol group, with the members being actively involved in the songwriting, choreographing, and other aspects of their music and performances.[2][3]

Name[]

The name "Seventeen" is explained as "13 members + 3 units + 1 team", representing the 13 individual members from 3 different units (hip-hop, vocal, and performance) who all come together to form one group.[4][5]

History[]

2013–2015: Formation and early years[]

Starting in 2013, Seventeen appeared in regular live broadcasts of a show called Seventeen TV on the online streaming platform UStream. The show had multiple seasons in which the trainees were introduced and shown practicing performances, with some seasons ending in Like Seventeen concerts.[6][7] Prior to debut, Seventeen also appeared in the reality TV show Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan, broadcast on MBC between May 2–26, 2015. The show concluded with the group's debut showcase.[8]

Seventeen debuted on May 26 with a live showcase televised by MBC. They were the first male K-pop group to debut with a one-hour live showcase on a major broadcasting channel, with label-mates Lizzy and Raina serving as MCs.[9] Three days later, their first EP 17 Carat was digitally released.[10] 17 Carat became the longest-charting K-pop album of the year in the US[11] and was the only rookie album to appear on Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015" chart.[12][13]

On September 10, their second EP Boys Be was released, which would later become the highest selling rookie album of 2015.[14] The album's success earned the group awards at the Golden Disk Awards, Seoul Music Awards, and Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.[15][16] Seventeen was also the only K-pop group on Billboard's "21 Under 21 2015: Music's Hottest Young Stars" list.[17][18]

Seventeen held a four-date concert series titled 2015 Like Seventeen – Boys Wish from 24 to 26 December as an end-of-year celebration in Seoul.[19] After the concerts' success, Seventeen held two related concerts the following February in 2016, entitled Like Seventeen – Boys Wish Encore Concert.[20]

2016: First studio album, first win and rising popularity[]

Seventeen's first full-length studio album Love & Letter was released on April 25, 2016. Besides success on domestic charts, the album charted on the Oricon Weekly Pop Album Chart in Japan.[21][22] Seventeen received their first win on a music show with the album's lead single "Pretty U".[23] Love & Letter was later re-released as a repackaged version on July 4 along with the lead single "Very Nice".[24][25] Promotions were immediately followed by Seventeen's 1st Asia Tour 2016 Shining Diamonds, which included venues in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, and China.[26][27] On December 5, the group released their third EP Going Seventeen.[28][29]

2017–2018: Touring, breakthrough, Teen Age and new EPs[]

Seventeen held six concerts in Japan between February 15–24 named 17 Japan Concert: Say The Name #Seventeen. The concerts attracted a total of 50,000 spectators despite the group not having officially debuted in Japan.[30] On April 1, Seventeen became the first idol group to have a second season of the show One Fine Day after filming the series during their stay in Japan. The second season was titled One Fine Day in Japan and was created in collaboration between South Korean broadcaster MBC and Japanese network Music On! TV.[31][32]

Seventeen's fourth EP Al1 was released on May 22, 2017.[33] It peaked at number one in Korea and sold over 330,000 copies by the end of the year.[34] The lead single "Don't Wanna Cry" became one of the group's most popular tracks with its music video becoming Seventeen's first music video to hit 200 million views on YouTube.[35] A series of videos titled 2017 Seventeen Project and three music videos subtitled Chapter 0.5 Before AL1 were subsequently uploaded.[36][37][38] The group completed their first world tour, 2017 Seventeen 1st World Tour "Diamond Edge", during which they visited thirteen cities in Asia and North America, on October 6.[39] On November 6, the group released their second full-length studio album Teen, Age.[40]

Seventeen released a special album on February 5, 2018, named Director's Cut.[41][42] Although Director's Cut contained all tracks from the previous Teen, Age album, it was promoted as a special album instead of a repackaged one due to the presence of four new tracks, including lead single "Thanks".[43][44] Five days later, Time magazine included Seventeen on their list of the six best K-pop groups to know about.[45]

Seventeen officially debuted in Japan on May 30 with their first Japanese mini-album We Make You.[46][47] Seventeen released their fifth EP You Make My Day on July 16. You Make My Day was their first release to be awarded with Platinum status.[48][49] Promotions for this album took place in between the Ideal Cut concerts in Seoul and concerts scheduled in other countries in Asia.[50][51]

2019–2020: Worldwide success, international recognition and Semicolon[]

Seventeen released their sixth EP You Made My Dawn on January 21, 2019.[52][53][54] The title track "Home" was a significantly popular release, winning ten trophies on weekly music shows. The EP also attained two triple crowns which consist of three consecutive wins on any one weekly music show, and a grand slam which consists of winning trophies on Music Bank, Inkigayo, M Countdown, Show! Music Core, and Show Champion in a single promotion period.[55][56] On May 29, Seventeen released their first Japanese single "Happy Ending",[57] which peaked at #1 on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart[58] and went on to receive Platinum status from RIAJ.[59]

On June 24, Seventeen announced their world tour 'Ode To You' with stops in Asia, North America, and Europe. The last leg of this tour was later cancelled, presumably due to the COVID-19 pandemic[60] in 2020. Seventeen released the digital single "Hit" on August 5[61] as a pre-release for their upcoming third full-length studio album, An Ode.[62][63] Following its release on September 16, the album sold 700,000 copies in its first week,[64][65] and granted the group's first daesang or grand prize for Album of the Year.[66] It was also critically acclaimed as the best K-pop album of the year by Billboard.[67]

On April 1, 2020, Seventeen released their second Japanese single "Fallin' Flower", which took the top spot on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart[68] and sold more than 400,000 copies in its first week, securing the first-place position on Billboard's Japan Hot 100 Chart.[69]

On May 13, Seventeen released the first installment of "Hit The Road", a documentary series posted on their YouTube channel. The documentary followed the group behind the scenes during their "Ode to You" tour.[70]

Seventeen poses for photos during a media showcase for its new EP album “Heng:garæ” at the Intercontinental Seoul Coex Hotel in southern Seoul on June 22, 2020.

On June 22, Seventeen released their seventh EP Heng:garæ.[71] Heng:garæ sold 1,000,000 copies in under a week, making Seventeen official 'million sellers' and granting them certifications from both the Hanteo and Gaon charts.[72][73][74] The album also charted well globally, with a no. 1 position on 27 iTunes Top Albums charts around the world.[75] On July 7, Heng:garæ took no. 1 on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart. Seventeen became the first foreign male artist in 12 years to do so, breaking the previous record set by the Backstreet Boys.[76]

On September 9, Seventeen released their second Japanese EP 24H. They were the third group to reach no. 1 on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart with four consecutive albums, a feat that was last achieved in 1977 by Scottish pop rock band Bay City Rollers.[77][78] On October 9, 24H gained platinum certification from RIAJ for selling over 250,000 copies.[79]

On October 19, Seventeen released their second special album Semicolon with lead single "Home;Run".[80] The album made headlines before its release after it was reported that more than a million copies had been sold in pre-orders alone, the second of the group's albums to reach the one-million mark.[81]

2021–present: Not Alone and Power of Love Project[]

On April 21, 2021, Seventeen released their third Japanese single "Not Alone".[82] On May 14, "Not Alone" obtained an official double platinum certification from RIAJ after selling over 500,000 copies and has solidified their position as a global top-tier group.[83] Moreover, with the sales of "Not Alone", Seventeen has set a new record as the first overseas male artist in history ever to surpass 200,000 first-week sales with three consecutive Japanese singles, from the first single "Happy Ending" until the latest "Not Alone".[83] They prove their popularity in Japan by dominating Billboard Japan weekly singles sales chart 'JAPAN Top Singles Chart', the comprehensive song chart 'JAPAN Hot 100', and getting the first place in Oricon Daily and Weekly Singles Chart.[83] The single also charted 1st in 10 regions of iTunes Song Chart around the world.[84]

Seventeen announced their Power of 'Love' project and the release of their eighth EP Your Choice on June 18 through a concept trailer video.[85] Opening the first signal of the project, Seventeen released a unit digital single from two members of the hip-hop unit, Wonwoo and Mingyu, with the title "Bittersweet (Feat. Lee Hi)" on May 28.[86] On June 18, 2021, Seventeen released Your Choice.[87]

On July 19, 2021, all members of Seventeen renewed their contracts with Pledis Entertainment.[88]
