History[]

St Mary’s is a Catholic College for girls, established by the Presentation Sisters on its present site in Harrington Street in 1868. In 1866, perceiving a great need in the fledgling colony for spiritual guidance, Bishop Daniel Murphy arranged for the Mother Superior of the Presentation Order (who happened to be his own sister), to travel from Ireland to bring Nano Nagle’s mission to far-off Hobart Town.

On 3 February 1868, the little school of Mount St Mary’s (as we were then known) received its first pupils. The fine sandstone convent was designed ‘to sit astride a grassy rise’ by the convict architect, Henry Hunter.

The college was dedicated to Mary, Mother of Divine Providence. The importance that we still attach to this dedication is reflected in the words on the College badge, Mary Our Mother.

A respected and flourishing educational institution, St Mary’s College has nurtured the spiritual, cultural, academic and sporting lives of many thousands of students in three different centuries.

Curriculum[]

St Mary's College is currently implementing the Australian Curriculum in Years Prep to 10. All subjects are compulsory in Years 7 and 8. In Years 9 and 10, students choose a certain number of elective subjects, as well as having core subjects. In Year 11-12, students choose subjects which must add up to a minimum of 700 hours per year. Many of these subjects are prerequisites for university courses.

Co-curriculum[]

St Mary’s College offers numerous cocurricular sports, performing arts, music, art and other general activities.

Opportunities for students range from fun runs and surfing competitions, to sporting rosters organised by Southern SATIS, to concerts, eisteddfods, performances and more.

Swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals are also held throughout the year. Additionally, a school musical takes to the stage every second year, as well as various Junior and Senior dramatic, musical and art performances, exhibitions and installations.

Sport[]

St Mary's College is a member of the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS).

Religion[]

The founder of the Presentation Sisters, Nano Nagle was the forerunner of a band of strong women of faith whose particular ethos and charism guide our school today. An explicit Christian ethos guides the college in every action and nurtures child towards a balance between her life and all creation.

The life of Jesus Christ, Gospel values and sound Christian principles, underpinned by Catholic doctrine, provide the structure and the special dimension which sets St Mary’s College apart.

The college every opportunity to gather together as a whole school and to celebrate its faith as a community – all students taking a prominent role in these celebrations at some stage in their life at St Mary’s College.

Education is at the centre of significant changes in the world of our children. Every day, in every way, they are confronted by constant shifts and changes in technology, socialisation, globalisation and learning theory.

This is all the more reason for the Catholic school to maintain its identity and integrity as a place where values and goals do not shift, because the promotion of the human person is its overarching goal.
