The Daily Wire is an American conservative news website and media company founded in 2015 by political commentator Ben Shapiro and director Jeremy Boreing.[1][2] It is a leading publisher on Facebook,[3][4] and produces several podcasts including The Ben Shapiro Show.[5]

Many Daily Wire stories repackage journalism from traditional news organizations while adding a conservative slant.[3][6] Fact checkers have said that some stories shared by The Daily Wire are unverified, and that The Daily Wire often misstates facts to advance a partisan view.[7][6]

History

The Daily Wire was conceived by Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing, who both worked for TruthRevolt, a news website that was formerly funded by the David Horowitz Freedom Center.[8] After the duo secured several million dollars in seed funding from the billionaire brothers Dan and Farris Wilks, The Daily Wire was launched in 2015.[8][9][6] Farris Wilks manages Forward Publishing LLC, which publishes The Daily Wire.[6] The website's headquarters were in Los Angeles, California.[10] In September 2020, Shapiro announced that The Daily Wire headquarters would move to Nashville, Tennessee.[11][12][13]

The Daily Wire became one of the leading news sites and publishers on Facebook in terms of engagement. In 2018, NewsWhip identified The Daily Wire as "by far" the top right-wing publisher on Facebook.[4] According to NewsWhip, The Daily Wire was the sixth-leading English-language publisher on Facebook in 2019 through the month of March. The site also had the second most articles among Facebook's 10,000 top stories.[14] In 2021, stories published by The Daily Wire received more likes, shares and comments on Facebook than any other news publisher, according to NPR.[3]

In March 2019, Podtrac ranked The Daily Wire's The Ben Shapiro Show the second most popular podcast in the U.S., behind The Daily.[15]

In June 2020, Shapiro stepped down from his role as editor-in-chief, which he had held since the site's founding, and took on the role of editor emeritus. John Bickley was announced as the site's next editor-in-chief.[1]

In January 2021, Shapiro announced that The Daily Wire was beginning a studio for TV and films that would not promote "leftist causes."[16] The Daily Wire acquired the North American distribution rights to the 2020 film Run Hide Fight, which premiered on its platform on January 14, 2021.[17][18]

Podcasts and radio

In addition to its written content, the site produces several podcasts, including The Ben Shapiro Show, The Michael Knowles Show, The Matt Walsh Show, and The Andrew Klavan Show.[5]

The reach of The Ben Shapiro Show expanded in April 2018 when Westwood One began syndicating the podcast to radio.[19] In January 2019, Westwood One expanded Shapiro's one-hour podcast-to-radio program, adding a nationally syndicated two-hour live radio show, for three hours of Ben Shapiro programming daily.[20] As of March 2019, according to Westwood One, The Ben Shapiro Show is being carried by more than 200 stations, including in nine of the top ten markets.[21]

On March 19, 2021, Candace Owens joined The Daily Wire and hosts Candace, a political podcast.[22]

Criticism and controversies

According to Snopes, "DailyWire.com has a tendency to share stories that are taken out of context or not verified", including reports on protesters digging up Confederate graves, Democratic congresspeople refusing to stand for a fallen Navy SEAL's widow, and Harvard University holding segregated commencement ceremonies.[7] The credibility checker NewsGuard assessed that while The Daily Wire "does not repeatedly publish false content", it "severely violates basic standards of credibility and transparency" and "often misstates facts to advance partisan opinion".[6]

The Daily Wire has published articles expressing skepticism that climate change is occurring and that humans contribute to climate change. Climate scientists have described the articles as being inaccurate and misleading.[23][24][25]

During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, academics at University of Oxford and Oxford Internet Institute described some of The Daily Wire's coverage of pandemic lockdown restrictions and the World Health Organization as misinformation.[26][27] NPR has criticized The Daily Wire's coverage of COVID-19 vaccines for being misleading.[3][28]

The Daily Wire incorrectly credited the Housing and Urban Development secretary, Ben Carson, with finding over $500 billion in accounting errors made by the Obama administration. FactCheck.org reported that the errors were discovered and published by HUD's independent inspector general before Carson became secretary.[29]

The investigative website Popular Information accused The Daily Wire in October 2019 of violating Facebook's policies by creating 14 anonymous pages promoting its content exclusively to boost engagement. A new Facebook policy might force them to add their ownership to their pages.[30][31] Facebook told Popular Information that it would take no action against The Daily Wire.[32][33]

In July 2021, NPR accused The Daily Wire of turning "anger into an art form and recycled content into a business model".[28] In response, Shapiro tweeted: "The establishment media's deep desire to keep people from clicking on stories they want to read, and to re-establish their traditional informational monopoly -- now an effort funded by US taxpayer dollars via NPR -- is truly authoritarian garbage".[28]
