Valašské Meziříčí (Czech pronunciation: [ˈvalaʃskɛː ˈmɛzɪr̝iːtʃiː]; German: Wallachisch Meseritsch), colloquially Valmez, is a town in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic. It has around 22,000 inhabitants. The centre of the town is historically significant and since 1992 has been protected by law as urban monument zone.[2]

The Vsetínská Bečva and rivers join in the town to form the Bečva River.

Etymology[]

The name comes from "mezi-říčí" (being between rivers); the centre is in the wedge of the confluencing and Vsetínská Bečva rivers. The adjective "Valašské" specifies that this town is located in Moravian Wallachia.

The first mention of Valašské Meziříčí is from 1297. With the town status is first mentioned in 1377.[2]
