He was appointed as Senator since March 2020 to be eligible as a deputy minister. On 16 August 2020, he was elected as the Youth Chief of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), a component party of the ruling coalition. He is also known as 'Mat Jargon' for his frequent use of unnecessarily bombastic language when speaking.[1]
Education and early career[]
After he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Petronas,[2] he worked at Petronas as a Business and Strategic Planning Executive, under the Technology and Engineering (T&E) Division.
On 1 April 2010, he has been appointed as the Senior Executive of the Leading Unit and is one of the individuals responsible for establishing the Bumiputera Education Leading Foundation (Yayasan Peneraju) under the Prime Minister's Department.[citation needed]
He was also an assistant lecturer at the Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS) before he becoming a Research Fellow at Putra Business School, Universiti Putra Malaysia.[3]
On 23 January 2019, he stated that he has obtained a Master of Arts in Geopolitics (Territorial Security) from King's College London.[4]
Political career[]
He was a special officer to the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman from 2018 until 2020.[5]
On 10 March 2020, he was appointed as Senator of the Dewan Negara to be qualified get into the cabinet.[6] The same day, he was also appointed as the new Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports under the Cabinet of Muhyiddin Yassin.[7]
On 16 August 2020, he was elected as new leader of ARMADA, which is the Youth Chief of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (PPBM), replacing Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman whom he used to help but was sacked from the party amid political crisis.[8]
Controversies[]
During the early days of his deputy ministership, it was found that he lacked a basic understanding of fundamental economic concepts such as inflation. He had suggested the Central Bank of Malaysia print more money to ease the burden of those in poverty and to solve the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.[9]
He touted further controversy when it was found that he had used his political position for the personal gain of himself and his family. His own father publicly criticised him for this.[10]
